The Dragon Ball franchise could have rested on its laurels until the end of time and it probably would have done just fine. With every generation of people entering into their teenage years comes a new batch of fans ready to drop hundreds of dollars on the various shows, video games, books and figurines. But nope, apparently Akira Toriyama had more insane stories to tell as he created Dragon Ball Super in the past few years, giving fans many new characters, stories and debate. One of the more beloved of these new characters is without a doubt the hippest and most crazy cat in the universe, Beerus.

This millions of years old feline was first introduced in the DBZ film Battle of Gods as the antagonist of the film but as we went on, we found out that he isn't nearly as bad as his title of God of Destruction would imply. GRANTED, he still destroys planets for the stupidest of reasons, but at least he's much more multi dimensional than other characters in the Dragon Ball multiverse. With his giant ears and attitude that would make a sloth look energetic by comparison, he is one of the most ridiculously powerful characters in a world filled with people that can casually blow up planets. In the short time that we've known this force of nature, we already have a whole boat load of interesting facts about him. So strap in for 20 facts that you didn't know about Beerus.

20 He's The Strongest God Of Destruction

via otakukart.com

With the Tournament of Power still ongoing in the Dragon Ball Super anime and universes slowly being blinked out of existence, it's likely that we're not going to see all the Gods of Destruction going at it in their little battle royale. The dream fight of cat vs clown will never come to pass in animation, but it did occur in the manga.

Unlike how Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z adapted the books into anime, the current series works the other way around. That said, there are some differences between the two. Like in the manga, all the Gods teamed up to destroy Beerus! Effectively tired of his crap (moreso for his tolerance of Goku's stupidity), they all take their best shots at him but Beerus dodges all their attacks. The match only stops because it's too fast for Zeno to keep up. Curse you, God of everything!

19 There's An Easy Way To Kill Him

via dragon-ball-power-lvls.wikia.com

With his immense power and and immunity to regular ki, it may seem like an impossibility for most people in the universe to slay the God of Destruction. All the Z Fighters could band up with all their villains and they still couldn't beat Beerus. But somebody who can be taken out with relative ease is the Supreme Kai. You know, that God who was essentially responsible for Majjin Buu?

Well it was revealed in Dragon Ball Super that there is a weakness that ties these two characters together. If you kill Supreme Kai, Beerus will also cease to exist and vice versa. Beerus should count his lucky Dragon Balls that while he was sleeping for all those years that nobody decided to take out Supreme Kai.

18 His First English Appearance Was In A Video Game

via youtube.com (shaje islam)

It isn't often that a character debuts in a video game before going on to make his first appearance in the anime of the Dragon Ball series. But that's exactly what happened for us westerners in the case of Beerus.

While the Japanese version of the film Battle of Gods was released in Japan in March 2013, it didn't get localized by Funimation until August 2014. But in January of that same year, we got yet another DBZ game for our thumbs to latch on to. The game in question is Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z , a game which divided the DBZ community, some loving it and some hating it. But it did grant us the honour of hearing Jason Douglas perform the voice of Beerus for the first time.

17 He Stole A Power From Superman

via dragonball.wikia.com (left) and via comicvine.gamespot.com (right)

Boy oh boy, even when talking about someone other than Goku, it seems that the internet can't avoid drawing comparisons from Superman to DC. Well allow us to throw another shrimp on the barbie and make a comparison from the Man of Steel to the God of Destruction.

In the Silver Age of comics, Superman was comically overpowered. Not only could he summon mini clones of himself out of his hand, but he also sneezed so hard one time he destroyed a solar system. Not to be one upped by a mere mortal (even one who can shoot lasers out of his eyes), Beerus also showed that his sneezes are potent as he has sneezed away moons, planets and suns throughout his life. Superman vs Beerus in a sneezing contest... make it happen, internet!

16 He Is Immune To Mind Control

via dailymotion.com (MXE Videos)

Despite only introduced to the world in the past five years, there are a lot of interesting tidbits about Beerus due to the several forms of media that DBZ takes over. That includes video games obviously and specifically the Dragon Ball Xenoverse series of games.

The main plot of the first game involves the God of the Demon Realm Demigra trying to erase history and create a new one which he controls. Throughout the game he takes control and powers up several characters, from Raditz all the way to Frieza. In the scariest moment of the game, it looks he has successfully taken control of Beerus's mind. But in reality, Beerus was faking it and instead aimed his ultimate attack at Demigra himself. It didn't work, but it did show that Beerus cannot be controlled. Except if you have good food.

15 He Is Passionate About Fried Eggs

via imgur.com (left) and tasteslikehome.org (right)

Speaking of Dragon Ball Xenoverse, its sequel also shows off some good character moments for our favourite cat dude. In the latest expansion pack for the game, there is a cutscene which shows the brothers of destruction (apologies to The Undertaker and Kane) arguing over the best toppings for a fried egg.

*Imagine we're speaking in the voice of the World Tournament Announcer* "In this corner we have Beerus who argues that ketchup is the only proper topping for a deliciously cooked fried egg! But his Universe 6 brother Champa asserts that sprinkled sugar is much superior to the corn syrupy red stuff! Oh no, they might come to blows... AND WHIS AND VADOS come in with the save!" We feel that our version is better than the cutscene, which isn't voiced at all.

14 He DID Fight Champa

via animeoutsiders.com

Throughout the entire time that we've seen Beerus and his brother Champa on screen,  they've been bickering like a couple  of... well, brothers. But you would think that with their tempers they would have come to blows on screen by this point. Well, they did fight in print form, just not on your television set.

In the manga, we see a flashback to an argument between the feline brothers over what else: food. Beerus gets mad that Champa ate a fruit of his, and they have a battle which threatens to destroy an entire universe. Fortunately for that universe, Vados and Whis come in and stop them. From there, they decide to have compare food from their universes instead of fight. Probably for the best.

13 He Ain't Afraid Of No Ghosts

via youtube.com (Starlitbox)

So everyone knows that the Ghostbusters remake starring an all-female cast was a hot pile of garbage. But we think we know a remake of the Ghostbusters that would set the internet on fire in a good way... BY DOING IT WITH A KILLER CAT!

What do you mean Beerus can't destroy ghosts? He's the God of Destruction, is he not? There is proof of Beerus actually being capable of this. Another character of Akira Toriyama's named Dr. Mashirito made a cameo inside the anime Dragon Ball Super as a ghost. Thinking he was immune to being destroyed, he taunted the god. Bad move, as Whis comments that there isn't a thing Beerus can't destroy. The cat promptly erases him out of existence. Who you gonna call?

12 He Lied About Wiping Out Dinosaurs

via youtube.com DragonBall Addict)

An interesting thing that Beerus has claimed to have done was wipe out the dinosaurs on Earth. It's a weird thing to brag about, as he has the power to wipe out entire planets, so why would destroying some lowly reptiles seem impressive? Well, even more oddly, Beerus was lying about this statement as we can clearly see in multiple instances in the franchise where dinosaurs are very much alive.

Fans were quick to come to the defense of their cat man though. Instead of Beerus lying about that, it's possible that he THOUGHT that he wiped out the dinosaurs when in fact he might have mistakenly left some eggs behind. Or perhaps he found some of them cool so he decided to leave some behind. Whatever the reason, Beerus most certainly didn't wipe them out.

11 He's Based Off Akira Toriyama's Pet

via memedroid.com

The creator of Dragon Ball may have named his series about a giant mythological lizard, but his love definitely lies with cats. He based the character Korin off of one of his previous cats, and the next character that was a cat in Dragon Ball was obviously going to be based off another pet of his.

This time, it would be a Cornish Rex cat. This breed of cat is slender, has giant ears and big eyes just like our destroyer god. The rest of his design would come from ancient Egyptian figures Seth and Sekhmet, and as we all know from Yu-Gi-Oh! series, ancient Egypt is the root of all evil and we must purge it from our timeline before giant white dragons burn our world.

10 His Original Name Was More Fitting

via comicvine.gamespot.com

Akira Toriyama's penchant for naming characters after food knows no bounds. Even when creating Gods of Destruction in his world, he can't resist the urge, so of course he named his furry killer after a drink But that wasn't going to be his original name.

At first, Beerus was instead going to be called Birusu. Now for us stupid westerners who don't speak Japanese, this doesn't seem like too much of a difference. But in Japan it totally is! Birusu is actually a Japanese pun for the word "virus." Seeing as how Beerus can be a devastating force of nature, it makes sense that he can be seen as a virus to some civilizations. But their food probably sucked, so who cares, are we right, people?

9 Stole Another Power From Superman

via imgur.com

Both Beerus and Superman have power lists that could fill up dictionaries with how long they are. As we said before, Beerus stole the power of super sneezing from Superman of the Silver Age of Comics. But he also stole another power of Mr.Kent's, this one from the more general power set of the Man of Steel.

In Battle Of Gods, it's shown that Beerus can overhear Oolong and Yamcha whispering to each other a very distance away from the God. This allows him to defeat the pig dude in a game of rock paper scissors. This is thanks to his comically oversized ears, of course. While this power is nowhere on the same level as Supes, the idea is all the same.

8 He Lost In Arm Wrestling

via youtube.com (RoseChaos)

He can blow up planets, but we all know the true measure of a real manly cat man is if he can win in an arm wrestling contest. Considering that he's been able to flick people with his finger so hard that he sends them flying, Beerus should be able to defeat anyone in our universe in the test of might. But not everyone in the multiverse, apparently.

As we said at the top of the countdown, in a combat setting Beerus has no equal among the Gods of Destruction. But that doesn't mean he's physically the strongest God. One time, he lost an arm wrestling contest to the mouse God of Destruction Quitela. This is revealed in the aforementioned battle royale between all the Gods of Destruction.

7 He Is Responsible For Ultimate Gohan

via deviantart.com (Surgeon-Art)

One of the biggest anger-inducing facts about Dragon Ball Super for many fans is how weak Gohan has become compared to his prime in the Buu saga. That storyline was, of course, where the son of Goku reached the peak of his powers as Ultimate (also known as Mystic) Gohan. Well, fans can thank Beerus for that form even existing.

For you see, about 75 million years before Age 1, Beerus had a disagreement with Old Kai. Beerus of course couldn't destroy a Kai (that would be impolite ya know), so instead he sealed him inside the Z Sword for millions of years. Once Gohan broke the Z-Sword years later, he released the lecherous old man who unleashed his hidden potential. See Beerus! Not all things are solved by killing.

6 He Is Trolled By Whis

via pinterest.com

As Beerus revealed at the end of Battle of Gods, his master Whis is his teacher and he's also more powerful than him. We've seen times where if Whis feels Beerus is getting too rowdy, he'll KO him in one blow. Sometimes though, Whis just uses this power gap to troll his student.

In Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, the player's custom character takes on Beerus in a sparring match to see who would go after one of the villains of the game, Towa. In an effort to calm Beerus down, Whis draws his symbol on his student's head much like he did to Goku and Vegeta's gis. Beerus then flies off to wash it off, but it succeeds in calming him down. Oh, Whis, you clever little angel, you.

5 He Sucks At His Job

via youtube.com (Grand Priest)

If power directly related to how good of a God of Destruction would be, Beerus would be far and away the greatest in all of the 12 universes. It doesn't necessarily work that way though, as according to the "Mortal Levels" from DBS, Universe 7 is the second WORST universe. How can we suck so bad? We can thank Beerus and the Supreme Kai for that.

Basically, Beerus and the Supreme Kai are not qualified for their jobs. The Supreme Kai is supposed to protect and guide their universe towards prosperity, but because of his super hands-off approach to managing his universe, he doesn't. Beerus is even worse, though, as he sleeps for most of his life. When he is awake, he destroys planets over his taste in their food. Combine that with the fact that the two gods don't get along, and we have a recipe for disaster.

4 He Is The First Movie Villain To Be Canon

via deviantart.com (GiuseppeDiRosso)

As much as some fans desperately want characters from the DBZ films like Broly to be canon inside the main Dragon Ball world, it just ain't gonna happen. Since the first DBZ titled Dead Zone in 1989, all the films in the franchise were considered irrelevant to the main story.

That all changed in 2013 with the highly acclaimed Battle of Gods movie. We may not have known it in the lead up of the movie, but Beerus would go on to be the most universally liked villain from the films. He's also the only one that matters. We realize we're using the word liberally here, but for our purposes here it fits. He does destroy planets, after all.

3 He Rage Quits!

via deviantart.com xxlightsourcexx)

Nobody likes a rage quitter.  It takes the fun out of the game, and just makes you look like a complete wimp. We hope we don't get hakaied for saying this, but Beerus is a big sore loser when it comes to games. Just ask King Kai.

The reason why King Kai's planet was so small was finally unveiled, courtesy of Whis in Battle of Gods. Apparently, after either losing a racing video game or a game of hide and seek (accounts differ from the manga and anime), Beerus got so angry with losing that he destroyed most of King Kai's planet. Double K then took a chunk of his destroyed world and turned it into his new home. We wonder if Nappa from the abridged series would be down for patty cake with Beerus...

2 Do Not Serve Him Greasy Food

via dragonball.wikia.com (left) and abc13.com (right)

Greasy food can be tasty if prepared properly, but if something is greasy to the point where even Rocky's trainer Mickey is getting overwhelmed, then we have a problem. When most people get greasy food, they just move on with their lives. But Beerus is definitely not most people.

In the first episode of Dragon Ball Super, Beerus wakes up from his slumber to visit a planet of pig people in order to judge their planet... and, of course, feast. At first it looks as if Beerus will spare the planet, as he is satisfied with their dessert. But unfortunately, the other food was too greasy. According to Beerus, greasy food ain't good for you. So he only blew up half their planet. Of course. Toriyama, please consider a spin-off cooking show with Beerus and Whis. Please, we can pay.

1 He Was Supposed To Destroy Planet Vegeta

via artstation.com (Guilherme Freitas)

The Dragon Ball franchise would have been a whole lot different if Beerus had been the one who blew up Planet Vegeta like he was supposed to instead of Frieza. While Beerus was taking his nap, Frieza took advantage and did the deed himself. After Beerus awoke from his slumber, he was furious with the fact that Frieza did it anyway.

Maybe if Beerus hadn't been so lazy and bad at his job like he discussed before, Frieza would have been pushed to side. He might have even been destroyed, as the cat doesn't like the frost demon too much anyway. We, for one, would love to see Beerus give that guy exactly what he deserves. But alas, we probably won't get that.
