Longtime Dragon Ball Z fans know that there are a lot of inconsistencies when it comes to the Majin Buu arc. At one point, Akira Toriyama planned to end his run on the manga with the Cell Saga. This is likely why the story fits so well with what came before and manages to tie a nice bow on the story with Gohan finally surpassing Goku as the most powerful person on Earth. Somewhere along the way, Toriyama changed his mind and decided to do one more storyline, but what he created was filled with inconsistencies and confusion, which proved to be troubling for the anime adaptation.

As a result, we saw Dragon Ball Z’s story arc revert in some ways in order to re-establish Goku as the hero and watch Gohan struggle to keep up. It also gave us one of the most confusing villains in the entire franchise.

Dragon Ball originally made its name as an action-comedy battle manga, however, the seriousness of Dragon Ball Z caused the story to stray from its initial purpose. Villains like Vegeta, Frieza, and Cell proved to be no laughing matter, but the debut of Majin Buu was entirely different. Instead of a menacing bad guy, we got a funny-looking fat child. Every DBZ villain has their own metamorphoses, so Buu would eventually evolve into something more sinister. Buu’s transformations were nearly impossible to make sense of, leaving us with 20 things that still make absolutely no sense.

20 There Are No Rules Here

Screen Rant
Majin Buu Bulma Chocolate

Buu’s signature attack is the Transformation Beam that he used to transform people into different types of foods. The only problem with this attack is that there seem to be no rules attached to how exactly this technique affects its victims. He first uses it on Dabura, changing him into a cookie and eating him.

He is not absorbed and goes straight to the afterlife.

However, when Good Buu has his beam deflected back at him by Evil Buu, he is eaten and absorbed to become Super Buu. Then he uses it again to eat everyone on Kami’s Lookout, who all end up in the afterlife. In Dragon Ball GT, Buu uses the technique to keep Pan and Mr. Satan safe from Baby. He even hides them inside his own body and is able to turn them back later. There are no rules here.

19 Remember That Guy?

via Comicvine

Dragon Ball Z explains that before the events of the show, Majin Buu had attacked the homeworld of the Kai and absorbed the Grand Supreme Kai himself. This act resulted in his good nature corrupting Buu’s evilness to create Innocent Boo. However, there seems to be no explanation in regards to what happens to the Grand Supreme Kai after this.

Considering it’s been millions of years, it’s likely that he’s been assimilated into Buu permanently, but that fact is never really brought up. Super Buu absorbs several other characters on the show and also takes on many of their characteristics, but it’s never really stated that they will be permanently assimilated into him. Goku and Vegeta only go inside him to rescue those he absorbed without having to end them.

18 This Guy Really Didn’t Learn The First Time

Buu Babidi
YouTube - Rubrizar

Millions of years ago the wizard Bibidi discovered a way to release Buu from hibernation and planned to use him as a tool to gain power across the universe. Unfortunately for him, Buu soon proved to be unreliable and far too dangerous to continue trying to manipulate.

Once Buu absorbed the Grand Supreme Kai and became Innocent Buu, he had his opportunity to lock Buu away again and be rid of him.

Fast forward to Dragon Ball Z, and though Bibidi is gone, his doppelganger Bibidi lives on and plans to release Buu once again. But hold up. If Bibidi is basically a magical duplicate of Babidi, why would he be motivated to release an entity that his original self knew was uncontrollable? Bibidi was also likely alive back then to see what had happened, so he basically asked for it when he released Buu again.

17 Why Is He On Earth?

via youtube.com (Ndukauba)

Millions of years ago when the wizard Babidi unleashed Buu upon the universe, the two went from planet to planet destroying entire worlds. They eventually ended up on the Sacred World of the Kai where Kid Buu fought the Supreme Kais. It was here that Buu absorbed the Grand Supreme Kai, became Innocent Buu, and was then resealed by Babidi.

Shin then ended Bibidi while still on his home planet, and that was supposed to be the end of Buu. Now in Dragon Ball Z, we see that Babidi is on Earth to find the sealed Buu and release him from his Sealed Ball. However, why exactly is Buu on Earth to begin with? The planet might have a lot of strong fighters now, but millions of years ago there was no one. Buu had nothing to do with Earth.

16 The Biology Is Never Explained

via: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/NightmareFuel/DragonBallZ

A lot about Buu is never really explained, but one of his most inexplicable features is his ability to conserve and generate matter. Apparently, Buu can split into multiple different versions of himself without losing any piece of his physical structure.

You would think that Innocent Buu splitting into Good Buu and Evil Good would result in the good version being smaller.

You would be wrong, because he remains identical. Even if Evil Buu existed as just steam inside his body, he is only composed of so much matter. Maybe he lost a good portion of his mass and now weighs a lot less than he once did, but the show never goes into that. Sometimes simply saying that it’s magic leaves us with too many unanswered questions.

15 This Should Not Have Worked The Way It Did

Vegito
via YouTube - Abood Abuzarqa1

Over the course of Super Buu’s reign of terror, he managed to absorb Gohan, Piccolo, Goten, and Trunks. Goku and Vegeta had to permanently fuse just to become stronger than the bad guy, but they decided to get absorbed to in order to save their loved ones. In a shocking turn of events, Vegito split apart inside the body of Buu, even though it should have been permanent.

It’s explained that the two were split apart once they dropped their Saiyan Barrier inside Buu’s body, but if that was up at the time of their absorption, should they have really been absorbed in the first place? It seems that even when there is a proper explanation for something involved with Buu, it still doesn’t make much sense.

14 He Can’t Have Been This Strong

via eventhubs.com

Buu proves to be incredibly resilient when it comes to his ability to bounce back from the most devastating attacks. The ability to manipulate the form of your body and regenerate from any damage seems to have its benefits. Still, it’s hard to really take seriously the way Goku ends up defeating Goku.

It was already shown that blowing up the Earth can’t even stop him.

Now that we’ve established what can and can’t defeat Buu, are we really going to accept that Goku’s Spirit Bomb was more powerful than an entire planet blowing up in his face? Keep in mind the fact that Kid Buu doesn’t get tired the more energy he uses, so it’s hard to see how these energy attacks even work.

13 Kid Buu Should No Longer Exist

gamespot.com

The story in the video game Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai revolves around Janemba’s desire to travel to the afterlife and absorb Kid Buu. The game is at least partially based on the Majin Buu arc from Dragon Ball Z and the film Fusion Reborn, however, it misses one alarming detail that kind of makes the entire storyline impossible: Kid Buu should no longer exist at this point.

After Buu is defeated in battle against Goku, he asks that the villain is reincarnated as a good person, so they can fight again. Kid Buu is eventually reincarnated as Uub, so he should no longer exist. The game is set two years after the events of Dragon Ball Z, so there is no excuse for him to still be hanging out in the afterlife for Janemba to even absorb.

12 This Story Should Not Be Possible

via youtube.com (Rhymestyle)

Like Cell before her, Android 21 from the Dragon Ball FighterZ video game is made up of all the strongest fighters in the universe. This time around, the cells of Majin Buu are also included in the creation of an android. While it is certainly going to make her stronger than anyone else, it kind of makes no sense that scientists would be able to include his genetic material.

First of all, Buu is shown to be capable of regenerating himself even after he blows himself up with the planet.

Second of all, as a magical being, he doesn’t exactly follow all the laws of nature. Extracting cells from his body should be impossible because he was ended when every piece of him was destroyed by Goku, and he’d be able to regenerate himself from them.

11 What Were They Thinking?

Inside Buu Roundworm
via Dragon Ball Wiki

Majin Buu is a magical being, so you would think that basic biology would not apply to him. He can manipulate his body however he wants and regenerate it no matter how much damage is done. When you consider that he was in hibernation for millions of years and was actually blown up into mere cells, you have to wonder how there is any kind of microscopic life growing inside him.

When Goku and Vegeta enter his body to find Goku, Trunks, Goten, and Piccolo, they encounter enzymes and a family of roundworms living inside Buu. How can this all be happening within a body that otherwise doesn’t follow any of the laws of nature? Sure, the life inside Buu is anime filler, but they really did go inside his body in the manga.

10 Buu Got Too Complicated

Good Buu Evil Buu
via YouTube - Clips HD

When Innocent Buu expels all the evil inside him, he created the entity known as Evil Buu. Once this new Buu absorbed his good side, he became Super Buu. However, when Good Buu is removed from the bod inside Super Buu’s body, he reverts back to his original Kid Buu incarnation. It sounds simple enough, but this really doesn’t make any sense if you think about it.

Shouldn’t Evil Buu and Kid Buu technically be the same entity, since they are both embodiments of the evil side of Majin Buu?

Sure, Evil Buu is skinny and sickly looking because he’s been pushed down by Innocent Buu, however, Kid Buu is the exact same being, especially after he expels Good Buu from his body. There were so many transformations that it feels like Toriyama got his wires crossed on this one.

9 The Logic Was Lacking Here

Kid Buu Mr. Satan Hercule
via YouTube - Son Johan

At a crucial point in the Majin Buu arc, Goku and Vegeta enter Super Buu’s body in order to rescue their loved ones inside him. There, they discover Good Buu is still alive and is being held captive. Vegeta believes that if they remove him, Super Buu will lose his powers, but instead, he actually loses all sense of himself and devolves back into his monstrous Kid Buu form.

When this happens, it should be noted that though the cocoon holding Good Buu was severed, he never actually left Kid Buu’s body. It’s only later that he expels Good Buu from his body in order to remove whatever influence his good side still has over him. The logic seems sound, but it makes no sense that he would transform into Kid Buu if Good Buu was still in his body and still had influence over him.

8 They Are Sitting On A Ticking Time Bomb

Buu Bee
via Dragon Ball Wiki

In his short time on Earth, Innocent Buu befriends Mr. Satan and a dog named Bee. The three of them manage to build a lasting friendship, but it all goes to pieces when Mr. Satan is shot and Buu releases his inner evil. When everything is said and done, the Good Buu lives on as a friend of the Z Fights on Earth and he picks his life back up where he left it with his dog.

However, seeing as how dogs are not destined to live on this Earth for as long as humans do, what happens when Bee finally passes on?

Mr. Buu has certainly expelled all the evil inside him, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t capable of causing mischief. Mr. Satan has told Buu never to get angry, so you know people are afraid he is still capable of great destruction. What happens when his dog passes on?

7 Whatever Happened To That Other Form?

Ultra Buu
via Dragon Ball Wiki

Grand Supreme Kai is not the only being that had an effect on the form of Majin Buu. Before he became the infantile Innocent Buu, Kid Buu also absorbed South Supreme Kai and took on a new form. This new Buu, colloquially referred to as Ultra Buu, was a totally jacked version of Kid Buu, and his power was massively increased during his battle against the Kais millions of years ago.

So what happened to that form? We know that Buu is influenced by those he absorbs into himself. If Grand Supreme Kai was so influential, South Supreme Kai should have at least played some kind of role in the fight against the Z Fighters. Perhaps the absorption of the Grand Supreme Kai cancelled out the South Supreme Kai, but there are so many rules to Buu that it’s hard to keep anything straight.

6 Majins Don’t Make Any Sense

Majin Race
via Dragon Ball XenoVerse Wiki

The video game Dragon Ball Online introduces the Majin race into the Dragon Ball universe. According to the lore of the game, Mr. Buu decided to split himself into male and female versions of himself in order to get married and have a child. From them sprang the Majin race, which went on to thrive.

However, there are a few things that just don’t make sense.

Forget for a second that the game actively ignores parts of Dragon Ball continuity, it’s just hard to believe an entire race of people could spring up from two people. Also, it should be noted that Buu and Miss Buu are basically the same person. While Majin Buu and Good Buu had different personalities, they were essentially the same being, so Miss Buu is no different. This one is really weird.

5 How Smart Is He, Really?

Super Buu Gotenks
Via: YouTube - Son Goku kun

It’s hard to get a sense of how intelligent Buu actually is. Mr. Buu seems incredibly stupid (until he says something profound), and Kid Buu is basically incapable of actual speech. While Evil Buu is capable of speech, it’s Super Buu that seems to be the articulate, intelligent form. The only thing is that his sense of intelligence is incredibly inconsistent.

Asked to wait an hour for Gotenks to show up and fight him, Super Buu has no idea what an hour is, but when he is shown an hourglass, he is able to count each individual particle of sand in short order. When Piccolo tells him to spend time hurting the people of Earth, he is able to precisely count out each individual person on the planet and systematically eliminate them.

4 We Needed One More Character Design Here

via youtube.com (D-Free)

Dragon Ball Z loves its transformations, but when it comes to Buu things get a bit confusing. He starts off as Innocent Buu, having previously absorbed the Grand Supreme Kai. At this point, Buu holds both good and evil within him. However, when Mr. Satan is shot, Buu unleashes all the evil from his body, which becomes sentient as its own being.

Upon expelling Evil Buu from his body, Good Buu still looks exactly the same, but it makes no sense that he looks exactly like Innocent Buu still.

If he previously had evil inside him, shouldn’t expelling it have caused him to change his appearance in some way? Later on, when Bood Buu is freed from Super Buu, the process causes him to transform into Kid Buu. It seems it should have worked like that here too.

3 He Should Have Survived

via: forum.gamer.com.tw

In Resurrection F, Frieza is brought back to life and challenges the Z Fighters on Earth. He ultimately proves to be no match for Vegeta, but before he is beaten, Frieza manages to blow up the planet. Among those we see die in the explosion are Mr. Satan and Mr. Buu, sleeping on the couch at home. It’s implied that they die along with everyone else, but would Buu have really died?

During the Majin Buu arc in Dragon Ball Z, Kid Buu survives the explosion of the planet. Buu shows he is able to manipulate his body in the same way, so shouldn’t he be able to piece himself back together after blowing up? The show doesn’t give us enough time to find out because immediately after the explosion, Whis reverses time and saves the Earth.

2 There’s No Way You Can Trust Him

Dragon Ball Z establishes that there is a clear difference between the evil Majin Buu and the kinder Mr. Buu. There may be good inside Buu, but is it really safe to trust Mr. Buu as if he’s not also part of the entity that committed mass destruction across the universe? Piccolo and Vegeta may have gotten an opportunity to prove themselves, but Buu hasn’t exactly helped his cause.

Mr. Satan literally had to tell Buu not to get angry anymore, so they clearly fear him and think him capable of doing something bad.

Yet they continue to allow him to get involved in matters of life and death. He nearly got the Earth destroyed because he fought with Beerus over some ice cream, and he left Universe 7 high and dry in the tournament. There’s no way he should be a Z Fighter.

1 Why Was Buu The Only Deserving One?

via dragonball.wikia.com

After Goku finally defeats Kid Buu, he hopes that the villain would come back as a good person so that he could fight him again. Apparently, all you have to do is ask this out loud and King Yemma will listen to you. Kid Buu is reincarnated as the hero Uub, who goes on to fight Goku at the World Martial Arts Tournament and becomes his new student at the end of Dragon Ball Z.

That’s all well and good, but if it was that easy to get villains transformed into heroes, why would the Z Fighters not ask that every villain they have ever faced be reincarnated too? Frieza’s returned from the afterlife an awful number of times for them to just keep hoping he stays put. Adding the likes of Frieza and Cell to their numbers would basically ensure the planet’s safety.
