Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will be releasing its final DLC pack, Trunks: The Warrior of Hope, later this year, and it has something that hasn't been seen in a Dragon Ball for a very long time — Future Gohan is shown without his arm.
The news comes from a recent issue of V-Jump, which showed off some brand new screenshots from the expansion and went into a little more detail on the game. The most interesting piece of information found in the article is the fact that Future Gohan will actually lose his arm in the DLC and be shown fully amputated. One of the images in the feature shows a render of Super Saiyan Future Gohan and he very clearly doesn't have his arm.
This might seem like a weird thing to fixate on, but Future Gohan hasn't been shown without his arm since Dragon Ball Sagas back in 2005. Every subsequent Dragon Ball release since then has found one reason or another to not show Gohan missing his arm.
Sometimes it's as lazy as having him be revived with his arm for story reasons, such as in Shin Budokai, and sometimes it's as jarring as having him limply hang his arm without using it. No matter what method is used, he isn't shown to be amputated.
The reasoning behind this is that Japan doesn't allow for excessive body gore or dismemberment to be allowed in their games, which includes characters with body parts removed. The only exception to this rule is the mobile game Dragon Ball Legends, which recently added Future Gohan without his arm. This is likely because mobile games don't have the same certification rules that console games have.
How this is possible through this Kakarot DLC episode isn't clear, but it might be because the game is a digital download and therefore has different certification processes, which is the same reason why Disco Elysium is banned in Australia now that it's become the Final Cut.
Even anime games outside of Dragon Ball have had a hard time showing limbs being removed. Shank in One Piece always has his cape over his removed arm, whilst Adult Sasuke has his arm covered in Ultimate Ninja Storm 4, despite the arm still being shown in the game.
Having the proper representation for Future Gohan here is great, as being amputated isn't something that should be hidden away or explained. The fact that Future Gohan is missing an arm is a big part of his character arc, and to see it being done justice is fantastic.
