During his many adventures in the anime, Ash Ketchum comes across hundreds of different Pokemon. Despite setting out to "catch them all", he's only managed to capture a little over 55 Pokemon which is quite surprising.

Dragon-type Pokemon aren't necessarily the type fans would associate Ash with. So there isn't much surprise that he never caught a majority of them. It's time to look at the 10 best Dragon-type Pokemon Ash Ketchum never caught from the Kanto region through the latest episodes of the anime where he traverses all eight known regions.

10 Haxorus

haxorus

Ash is a good friend on top of being a kind trainer to Pokemon. Because of that, he rarely trains the same species of Pokemon his friends possess. During his adventures in the Unova region, he picks up a traveling companion by the name of Iris who happens to be an aspiring Dragon-type trainer and Dragon Master.

She owns an Axew whom she loves and trains and, because of that, Ash never sought one out for himself. Iris eventually evolves her Axew into the impressive Haxorus after many trials and tribulations in the Unova region.

9 Dragalge

Dragalge from the Pokemon Anime underwater

The neat thing about the Pokemon anime is that sometimes it has these storylines that incredibly capture the magic of the creatures within. In the primary episode that features Dragalge, Ash and his friends investigate a sunken ship and discover several Dragalge had used their move called Acid to fuse the ship together.

This transformed the sunken vessel into a home and refuge for dozens of Water-type Pokemon. The world of Pokemon is full of wondrous creatures looking out for one another when they get a chance to. That's the same kind of altruism we see from Ash, too.

8 Altaria

altaria

Real Pokemon trainers understand that they never own the Pokemon they train. The partnership is about building a bond and helping one another grow into the best versions of themselves. That's why it makes sense that Ash never captured either a Swablu or an Altaria.

The interaction Ash and his friends have with wild Swablu results in them helping an injured Swablu overcome its fear of flying. Helping it overcome its fears and soar into the sky is more than enough growth for Ash to observe and grow from in that short amount of time.

7 Hydreigon

hydreigon

Hydreigon a naturally villainous-looking creature. In fact, the first time Ash comes across one, it is fighting a Dragonite in a brute and aggressive manner. Hydreigon is known as the Brutal Pokemon and that name is pretty apt for the natural attitude of these large Dragon-types.

According to the Pokedex, its natural response to any movement is to attack. That doesn't seem like the type of creature people want running around next to adorable base form Pokemon they're trying to train and evolve into their secondary and/or final forms.

6 Kingdra

kingdra

As mentioned in the entry for Haxorus, Kingdra is an example of Ash being a good friend. One of his first travel companions he ever meets and befriends is Misty. She has a knack for Water-type Pokemon and thus owns a Horsea.

Though she never fully evolves it into a Seadra or Kingdra, Ash knew the potential was always there. If there was anyone Ash wanted to avoid aggravating, it was his red-headed firecracker of a friend who wasn't afraid to give him a piece of her mind anytime he made a dumb mistake.

5 Flygon

flygon

Flygon, the Dragon and Ground-type Pokemon from the 3rd generation of Pokemon, is yet another Dragon-type Ash never obtained. The first time he sees this Pokemon in action is when May loses to a trainer using a Flygon in the Grand Festival Pokemon battle tournament.

Ash has never really had an interest in Bug-type Pokemon with the exception of Butterfree. Though Flygon technically isn't that typing, it resembles a giant bug in everything but that. It seems as if the loss of Butterfree might still be affecting Ash after all this time.

4 Kommo-O

kommo o

Kommo-O are some of the most interesting Pokemon in the franchise as they simply wait in caves for a worthy opponent. This means that they likely value strength and freedom above all else. Some creatures in the world of Pokemon simply aren't the type that trainers should capture and battle with.

Ash is a capable trainer, but the likelihood of a Kommo-O seeing him and his Pokemon as worthy opponents is rather unlikely. Then again, stranger things have happened for Ash throughout the various regions.

3 Salamence

salamence

A strong theory as to why Ash never bothered to acquire and train a Bagon into a Salamence is likely due to his experience with Charizard. Dragon-type Pokemon can tend to be difficult to deal with and take either a strong or persistent trainer to maximize the relationship when it comes to both loyalty and battle effectiveness.

To evolve a Bagon all the way and end up with a Salamence, it requires the Bagon to gain enough experience to reach level 50 after of course reaching level 30 and evolving into Shelgon.

2 Alolan Exeggcutor

alolan exeggcutor

Alolan Exeggcutor is quite the creature and is much different than its native Kanto counterpart and other Grass-type Pokemon. The Alolan regional variant is both Grass and Dragon-type and stands at over 35 feet tall.

For Ash to capture and train this Pokemon, he'd have to always take into account the height of indoor ceilings before he called upon the Coconut Pokemon. It seems he'd only be able to ever really use it outside which greatly limits its effectiveness in battle and would make both Ash and his Alolan Exeggcutor annoyed.

1 Tyrantrum

tyrantrum

Though Ash exudes a fiery temperament that would fit perfectly with a Pokemon like Tyrantrum, he's not the ideal trainer for that Dragon-type. In the 18th season of the anime, Ash meets a trainer that has one of the most special and unique bonds with a Pokemon in the entire series.

The trainer's name is Bonnie and she forms a special relationship with a Tyrunt that escaped from Team Rocket and landed in the middle of a forest. Her heart breaks when it's unveiled that the Tyrunt belongs to a Research Lab, but she vowed to return and visit.
