The gaming community is certainly in for a treat this holiday season, with the arrival of next-gen consoles, Atari’s new hybrid console, and now Dragon Quest’s first arcade machine is coming to Japan. Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai - Xross Blade  is coming to Japanese arcades next month, with a trading card battle game based on The Adventure of Dai manga series.

Published by Square Enix, Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai - Xross Blade will appear in Japanese arcades during late October. The trailer for the upcoming arcade title, which was released by developer Takara Tomy A.R.T.S, introduces us to the game’s main characters and brings the popular anime and trading card game Yu-Gi-Oh! to mind. During the presentation of the arcade machine, the property’s trading cards can be seen being placed on the machine’s interactive screen, which is reminiscent of the card battles featured in Yu-Gi-Oh!

Xross Blade is part of a new Dragon Quest project based on Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai, a manga that first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1989. The original manga, which was created by Riku Sanjō  and Kôji Inada, produced 37 volumes between 1989 and 1996, and encouraged the production of a 46-episode anime series and three anime movies. Battle Spirits Burning Soul artist Yoshikazu Amami has also created a new manga based on the arcade game, which will be launched in Shueisha’s Saikyō Jump magazine on October 1.

In a Japanese livestream hosted by V Jump magazine, Square Enix revealed three Dragon Quest games that would be released under the same project. The first was Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai – Bonds of the Soul for iOS and Android, which will be released in 2021 by DeNa. The final game to accompany the arcade and mobile game is Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai – Infinity Strash, which will be released in 2021 for next-gen consoles.

The story that inspired the project features Dai, the only human occupying the island of Delmurin. Dai is able to fulfil his dreams of becoming a hero when mentor Avan comes to train him to prepare him to face the demon lord Hadlar. After a courageous sacrifice from Avan, Dai obtains mysterious super powers and must stand with his fellow students to defeat Hadlar and restore peace to the world.
