The next mobile Dragon Quest game has a release date in Japan, as Square Enix has announced that it will launch on July 16.

The Dragon Quest series has mostly consisted of turn-based RPGs, but there have been tactical RPGs based on the games in the past, such as Dragon Quest Wars for the Nintendo DS. Dragon Quest Tact is an upcoming tactical RPG for mobile phones, where the player control groups of iconic monsters in the series as they do battle. The game will include a story mode and an endless battle mode.

The official Dragon Quest Tact Twitter account has announced the release date for the game. Dragon Quest Tact is set to launch on Android and iOS devices on July 16, but only in Japan. Fans can pre-register their interest in the game on the Japanese App Store/Google Play, which will set the game to automatically download when it becomes available.

It seems that the success of Fire Emblem Heroes pushed Square Enix to start releasing tactical RPGs based on their biggest franchises, as 2020 also saw the release of War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius on mobile phones. Square Enix has had incredible success with its own mobile ventures (most notably Dragon Quest Walk, which copies the format used by Pokémon Go), and that market has become increasingly profitable for the company.

The Dragon Quest franchise isn't as popular in the west as it is in Japan, so it's unclear if this game will make its way overseas, especially as there is still no word regarding Dragon Quest Walk. It's probably best not to get too excited for a localization of Dragon Quest Tact, considering what a gacha mess Dragon Quest of the Stars was. Square Enix wants to bleed fans dry with loot boxes, and if the Dragon Quest franchise isn't popular enough to do it, then it won't receive an English language release.

Dragon Quest Tact will be released for smartphones in Japan on July 16, 2020.
