Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride is one of the most popular entries in what may be the most beloved video game series in Japan, so it's surprising that it has taken this long for the game to be adapted into a CGI movie. Dragon Quest: Your Story is an adaptation of Dragon Quest V that seems to have abandoned the Akira Toriyama-style of the rest of the series in favor of something similar to a DreamWorks movie.

Dragon Quest V follows the story of a character who must find the legendary hero in order to save the world from destruction. The protagonist discovers early on that they are not the legendary hero. In fact, the true identity of the hero is one of the best twists in the series.

The trailer for Dragon Quest: Your Story also shows the two women who the protagonist can choose to marry in the game - Bianca and Nera. It remains to be seen if the romance plot will be dropped entirely in the film. The Nintendo DS version of Dragon Quest V also introduced a third love interest named Debora, who is missing from the trailer and may not appear in the movie.

The footage that was shown in the trailer suggests that at least 2/3rds of the game's story will be shown, with the protagonist traveling with his father as a boy and meeting his future bride-to-be. The question now is whether the movie will follow the whole plot of the game or whether it will wrap things up without introducing the true villain of the story.

The most surprising aspect of the Dragon Quest: Your Story trailer is that it has abandoned the art style of Akira Toriyama, who has worked on every game in the series. Toriyama is best-known for creating Dragon Ball. It's possible that the creators of the movie wanted to use a new style in order to distance Your Story from the Dragon Ball franchise, which has been a revival over the past few years.

Dragon Quest: Your Story is due to be released in Japan on August 2, 2019. There is currently no word on an international release.
