DragonBall FighterZ has surpassed all other fighting games to become the most popular fighter at this year’s Evo Championship.
If you’re a fighting game fanatic, then you owe it to yourself to pick up DragonBall FighterZ. Since its release earlier this year, the game has taken over the fighting genre thanks to its classic-yet-modern feel, sublime animation, and much-beloved source material.
There’s no better way to gauge DragonBall FighterZ’s success than by counting entrants at this year’s Evolution Championship Series, or Evo for short. Held in sunny Las Vegas, Nevada this August 3-5, Evo draws the best fighting game players from around the world to take part in a weekend-long bloodbath to determine who is the greatest fighter of them all.
Evo co-founder Joey Cuellar recently released the final player counts for the tournament broken down by game, and it comes as no surprise that DragonBall FighterZ is right at the top, having surpassed both Super Smash Bros. as well as Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition.
Evo 2018 Numbers - #Evo2018— Joey Cuellar (@MrWiz) July 21, 2018
1) DragonBall FighterZ - 2575
2) Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition - 2484
3) Tekken 7 - 1538
4) Super Smash Bros. for WiiU - 1354
5) Super Smash Bros. Melee - 1351
6) BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle - 1178
7) Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev 2 - 629
8) Injustice 2 - 363
DragonBall FighterZ has 2,575 entrants, blowing past the bulk of fighting games with only Street Fighter V even coming close.
It seems that most other fighting games have waned in popularity since last year’s Evo as players flock to the newcomer. Only Tekken has increased in player count, up to 1,538 from 1,278 last year.
Smash Bros. is still the most popular franchise overall merely by dint of them including two platforms for this year’s Championship. We’re certain that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will wildly change the fighting game landscape upon its release.
In the meantime, DragonBall FighterZ will continue to be the dominant force in the fighting game world for the foreseeable future. Developers Arc System Works have drawn praise from gamers the world over for their work on FighterZ, with fighter enthusiasts calling it the best fighting game in years.
After its first week of sales, DragonBall FighterZ sold over 2 million copies on PC, with millions more being sold on consoles. That number will continue to increase when DragonBall FighterZ releases on Nintendo Switch later this year.
