Sega’s Dreamcast may have undoubtedly lost the sixth console generation, and even pushed the studio out of the market, but it did manage to win the hearts of thousands. Seen as a tragic figure—a brave final stand from Sega, which was anything but lazy—the Dreamcast has retained a cult following in the gaming community, predominantly due to its nostalgic collection of games, including Sonic Adventure, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, and the original Soulcalibur.
But honestly, it looks like a whole lot of people just like the aesthetic. Clothing line Dumbgood has partnered with Sega to bring a new wave of Dreamcast merch. The gear up for grabs includes shirts, hoodies, and sweatpants, all emblazoned with the Dreamcast logo, or an image of the console itself. One piece even revives the Dreamcast’s eerie slogan: “It’s thinking”.
The slogan that was slapped all over adverts in the West referred to how powerful it was at the time of launch, back in 1999. Before the PS2 dominated the market, it boasted the best visual, and was also the first home console to come with a built-in modem, allowing for online play.
Price of the new merch ranges from $12 for a mask (currently reduced to $7.20) all the way up to $85 for the Sega Dreamcast black hoodie, with images of the console slapped on one of the sleeves.
This isn’t the only official recognition the Dreamcast is getting two decades after its demise. On the Sega shop you can still find clothing and pins for the console, despite its failure to win over the majority of consumes back in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The biggest news for fans of the console was of course its revival, with the Dreamcast mini being hinted at last October.
Dumbgood specialize in retro-inspired clothing lines. This isn’t its only selection of video game merch, having previously partnered with Sega for a Sonic the Hedgehog line, featuring the characters' classic 1990s/Sonic Mania designs.
