Shrek has long since surpassed being a character from a movie. For some reason I can't fathom, Shrek has become an internet sensation, the king of memes and bad horror games. There are probably children in the world right now who have never seen Shrek, but they have witnessed its impact just by strolling through the web. Despite being immensely popular, Shrek has more or less disappeared from movie theaters.

Just in case you need a reminder about the movie, Shrek was about an ogre who lived in a swamp and wanted to be left alone. He gets dragged into a quest for a princess, ends up falling in love with her, and the two of them live happily ever after. The movie was supposed to be the antithesis of a regular fairy tale, but it ended up following the same pathways. Shrek gained its popularity from its irreverent sense of humor, superb voice acting talent, and numerous pop culture references.

Despite its success, Shrek has its share of flaws. Believe me, it has its share of flaws. Nearly all kids movies have strange story elements since people try to make the plot more entertaining for children, and Shrek kind of takes the cake for flaws. There are more plot holes in Shrek than there are fart jokes in Shrek. (There are a lot of fart jokes in Shrek.) Don't believe me? Read on if you want to check out the unanswered questions and plot goofs that layer Shrek's story.

25 A Glowing Transformation

via: fanpop.com

Princess Fiona tries to hide the fact that she transforms into an ogre every night from Shrek and Donkey. The first night the three of them spent together was a bit of a predicament for her. She had to rip off some bark from a tree to fashion a door for a rock alcove so that Shrek and Donkey wouldn't see her change.

Her change, as we see near the end of the movie, involves a lot of glowing golden light. That piece of bark should not have been able to contain that golden glow. Honestly, Shrek and Donkey should have seen that brilliant light.

24 A Rescuer Fit For A Princess

via: parody.wikia.com

Lord Farquaad is an odd nut. He's the shortest man you meet in the movie, inside and out. When Shrek first meets him, Farquaad is hosting a tournament to see who is going to go rescue his princess for him. (The guy didn't even want to go rescue his own princess.)

Farquaad ends up sending Shrek to go find Fiona. As far as I'm aware, ogres were very much feared and detested in this world. Why would Farquaad send someone he disliked and distrusted to go rescue Fiona?

23 A Strange Match

via: pinterest.co.uk (Candace Graham)

One of the funniest aspects of the movie was Donkey's relationship with Dragon. So there's this dragon guarding Fiona in her tower, and this dragon just so happens to take a liking to Donkey. How is this relationship even possible?

Donkey and Dragon are completely incompatible.

Their sizes are different, for one thing, and their species are not similar at all. Dragon doesn't even speak words. Donkey should have been a tasty treat for her the day they met.

22 Two Sizes Too Small

via: youtube.com (Love Movie)

Fiona's transformation every night turns her into an ogre. As an ogre, she is naturally much larger than she is as a human. Throughout her journey with Shrek and Donkey, she only wears one slim-fitting, green gown.

I think she must have been hiding spares on her person. Otherwise, how could Fiona transform into a large ogre without tearing her dress? Or maybe, in this fantasy world that is Shrek, fabric is just stretchier than it is around here.

21 Why Didn't The Mirror Tell Farquaad The Truth?

via: pinterest.ie (Joeyiz1)

Lord Farquaad asks a magic mirror to help him find a princess. The mirror gives Farquaad three options to pick, and Farquaad picks Fiona. After Farquaad makes his choice, the mirror tries to warn Farquaad about Fiona's ogre condition, but Farquaad just shuts him up.

I understand the mirror being silenced then, but why didn't it tell Farquaad about Fiona's curse while it was presenting her as an option? Or why didn't the mirror say anything while Farquaad was looking at Fiona's picture on repeat?

20 'Tis But A Scratch

via: cswap.com

While Fiona is busy taking out Robin Hood and his men, all Shrek and Donkey can do is stare in amazement. But, as it turns out, Shrek got injured during the fight without realizing it. At some point while Robin Hood and his Merry Men were getting their behinds whupped, Shrek got his behind shot through with an arrow.

How do you not notice an arrow being shot into your rear?

Are ogre bottoms made of much sterner stuff than a regular person's?

19 Disagreeing With This Line Of Questioning

via: youtube.com (DreamWorksTV)

We are first introduced to Lord Farquaad when he is striding through his castle on his way to an interrogation chamber. Inside the chamber lies the hapless Gingerbread Man. When Farquaad reaches him, he begins questioning him about where the other fairy-tale creatures are.

And then, for some reason, Gingy starts telling him about the Muffin Man who lives on Drury Lane and who this Muffin Man is married to. It's a slightly humorous exchange, but it makes no sense given what Lord Farquaad was asking.

18 The Peter Pan Betrayal

via: dailymotion.com

Donkey is introduced to us while his owner is trying to sell him off. Lord Farquaad's men are handing out rewards to anyone who turns in a fairy-tale creature. We see Geppetto selling Pinocchio and Peter Pan selling Tinker Bell.

I can maybe swallow Geppetto getting rid of his untruthful puppet-child, but why would Peter Pan give Tinker Bell away when Tinker Bell is what makes him fly and stay young forever? It makes no sense for Peter Pan to abandon Tinker Bell.

17 Rooting For The Away Team

via: youtube.com (Maldad21)

During the tournament Lord Farquaad holds to decide who will go rescue Princess Fiona for him, Shrek and Donkey come barging in and interrupt the proceedings. Lord Farquaad sends the men participating in the tournament to attack the ogre and his pet.

Shrek then goes on to beat the men who dared to consider fighting him. (Shrek actually has a wonderful gift of showmanship.) The crowd of people watching the tournament begins to cheer for Shrek. This ogre just defeated their own men. Why would the crowd cheer for Shrek?

16 Peeling The Layers Back

via: youtube.com (DalMatian Tunes)

Fiona did not recognize that Shrek was an ogre when she first met him. I've got to call bull-turkey on that. Did she not notice the greenish tint to his skin color? Sure, his little ear thingies were hidden by his knight's helmet, but come on! The guy's skin is a lime-green color.

Fiona should get her eyesight checked if an ill-fitting helmet was able to throw her off so completely. At least she's not as bad as Lois Lane with Clark Kent's glasses. That is the worst disguise in the history of disguises.

15 Built-In GPS

via: shrek.wikia.com

Farquaad did not give Shrek and Donkey directions to Fiona's castle as far as I'm aware. How did the duo find her castle in the first place? Assuming that the fantasy world that Shrek lives in is as large as planet Earth, not having directions to a far-off location would pretty much guarantee that you wouldn't find it.

The world is a large place, and even a huge edifice like a castle would take ages to find if you left to go find it and walked in the opposite direction from where it lay.

14 The Snow White Problem

via: shrek.wikia.com

A bunch of fairy-tale characters make an appearance in Shrek. Snow White appears in her casket, lugged around by her faithful seven dwarfs. That does beg the question of whether or not the dwarfs always carry her around like that.

Is Snow White constantly "asleep," waiting for a prince to kiss her? Do the Dwarfs cart her around like luggage all the time? Given how they just placed her on Shrek's kitchen table when they were relocated to his swamp, I'm guessing the answer is a tentative yes.

13 The Sneakiest Home Invaders

via: pinterest.com (IMDb)

All of the fairy-tale creatures in the land are sent to live on Shrek's swamp due to Lord Farquaad's command. One evening when Shrek was trying to enjoy a quiet meal, he steps outside to realize he has a bunch of vagrants hanging out on his lawn.

How did he not hear the dozens of people arriving and setting up camp?

Tents were pitched and fires were made. Wolf even made it inside of Shrek's home and onto his bed. How could Shrek have not heard the ruckus?

12 Everybody Was Kung Fu Learning

via: emaze.com

Princess Fiona surprised us all when she showed us how well she knew how to fight. How did she learn those hand-to-hand combat moves? As far as I'm aware, she was a regular princess-esque child who was locked in a tower when she was young, and then later rescued by Shrek.

Did she learn those moves when she was a toddler? Or is she a self-taught fighter? All of those hours cooped up in the castle might have been filled with practicing punches, kicks, flips, and just general kung fu-ness.

11 What About A False Love's Kiss?

via: youtube.com (Maldad21)

After getting her heart broken by Shrek, Fiona resigns herself to marrying Lord Farquaad. A small consolation in being abandoned by the ogre she loves is that she'll be able to maintain her human form. If she kisses Farquaad, her curse will be over and she'll stay looking human forever.

But is that really the way it's supposed to work? Kissing anyone willy-nilly should not remove the curse. Fiona has to kiss her true love and then take on true love's true form. And no, I don't think she loved Lord Farquaad.

10 A Second Eviction Notice

via: reddit.com

Shrek's journey begins with his desire to have his land to himself. He agreed to rescue Fiona for Farquaad so that the fairy-tale creatures residing at his home would be kicked out. By the time his quest is done and Shrek returns home, all the fairy-tale critters are gone.

How did the fairy-tale people know to leave before Shrek arrived?

Farquaad only found out that Shrek had brought Fiona that same day. Did Lord Farquaad evicted the animals from Shrek's swamp before he had confirmation that Shrek had accomplished his task?

9 Some Guards You Have There

via: dreamworks.wikia.com

Shrek, Donkey, and Dragon fly to Duloc to stop Fiona's marriage to Farquaad. There are two problems with this moment. The first is that no one in the church heard the heavy thump of Dragon landing just outside the doors.

The second problem is that absolutely no guards hindered Shrek from busting into the church and interrupting the wedding ceremony. Dragon had understandably chased many of them away, but are you telling me there were no other guards around?

8 Once Upon A Time...

via: pinterest.com (GFD)

In an effort to mock typical fairy-tale movies, Shrek begins with the narration of a fairy-tale book. It's later revealed that Shrek is reading this book in his outhouse, and he even uses one of these pages to clean himself after his business is finished.

What was Shrek doing owning this book in the first place?

Reading doesn't seem like a high priority on the ogre's to-do list. Plus, Shrek openly mocks fairy tales. He shouldn't have wanted to keep such a book for his own. Did he seriously get that book to use as toilet paper?

7 Loneliness Needs Company

via: mumbyatthemovies.blogspot.com

Shrek reaches its low point when Shrek leaves Fiona with Farquaad, yells at Donkey to get lost, and returns home all on his lonesome. While Shrek was having a pity party at his swamp, Donkey met up with Dragon.

Apparently, their two paths just randomly crossed while they were both feeling sad. But how is that rationally possible? Dragon was left chained up at the castle. How did she get free? And of all the lake-sides to mope at, she chose the one near Donkey.

6 A Rushed Wedding

via: shrek.wikia.com

In order to marry Farquaad before the sun sets (and she turns into an ogre), Fiona begged Farquaad to move the wedding to the very day they met. During the montage that shows how unhappy Fiona and Shrek are with this situation, Fiona is shown getting fitted for her bridal gown.

Now that's what I call some quick work. I can only imagine what those poor dressmakers must have gone through in order to make a dress in a single day. (I'm not sure if Farquaad had his suit made in advance.)
