Dungeons & Dragons lets players embody character of their own creation on the tabletop, and players have made costumes of their characters for years. However, the fact that most characters are created by the players means that most players make their own costumes. Now, however, Wizards of the Coast is collaborating with Spirit Halloween to release an exclusive line of Dungeons & Dragons costumes and props.

Most of the costumes are from R.A. Salvatore’s popular series of novels set in the classic Forgotten Realms settings. It includes adult costumes for the iconic Drizzt Do’Urden and his friend and later wife Catti-brie. In addition to the costumes, several weapon props are also available, including Catti-brie’s bow Heartseeker – complete with arrows and quivers – and Drizzt’s dual scimitars Icingdeath and Twinkle.

In what is perhaps a stretch to find more popular official D&D characters, the line also includes a costume of the Dungeon Master. That is, the Dungeon Master that appeared in the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon that aired from 1983 through 1985 on CBS, and these days appears mostly in D&D memes. While fans of the show are few and far between, the character is still recognizable, if only as that Wallace-Shawn-looking gnome from the ‘80s D&D cartoon.

The remaining items are less costume pieces than they are D&D paraphernalia. They include a D&D-branded coffee mug and journal, which admittedly can be used as a flagon of ale and a spellbook in a pinch. The fleece blanket map of the city of Waterdeep and the lanyard complete with stitched D20 patch just look cool, and can be used at a con or your next D&D session.

Ultimately any attempt at branded costumes for Dungeons & Dragons is going to be limited by the fact that as many D&D players make their own stories as do play stories by Wizards of the Coast. D&D invites players to build their own space, which unfortunately makes branding like this complicated at best. Still, Spirit Halloween is featuring some of the most popular characters in the Forgotten Realms. Drizzt and friends do have a lot of fans out there; this could be more accurately aimed at them instead of D&D fans generally.
