Yesterday, we got our first good look at Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, the upcoming movie starring Chris Pine, Justice Smith, and Michelle Rodriguez. The trailer revealed a colorful band of heroes that go on a mission to save the world after accidentally stealing an object of power for someone they probably shouldn’t have. There’s plenty of Dungeons & Dragons references in the trailer to satisfy even the most ardent D&D fan, but those fans might have noticed something a little strange about one of the movie’s posters. It actually uses art from a breakaway version of the tabletop RPG and not the from one of D&D’s official source books.Related: Lord of the Rings: The Third Age Was More Than Just A Tolkien Final Fantasy CloneAs noted by D&D journalist Christian Hoffer, the poster depicts an Intellect Devourer, a nasty monster from the earliest days of D&D. It’s basically a brain with legs that acts like a Headcrab from Half-Life (although, I should point out that the Intellect Devourer arrived with the first edition of Dungeons & Dragons way back in the ‘70s, so it's the Intellect Devourer that likely inspired Half-Life’s Headcrabs and not the other way around).

When Pathfinder broke off from Dungeons & Dragons after 3.5 edition, it took several of D&D’s monsters with it. One of them was the Intellect Devourer, but Pathfinder used a different image to differentiate between the monster between the two games. The one you see in the poster is actually from Pathfinder, not D&D.

Hoffer also pointed out that this particular poster was created by BossLogic, the same artist that did this image of Henry Cavill lovingly caressing his PC back in 2020. It seems BossLogic might not be enough of a D&D fan to have known the difference between Pathfinder and D&D monsters.

We didn’t see an Intellect Devourer in the movie trailer, but there were certainly plenty of dragons, Owlbears, and other nasty monsters from the D&D universe. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves arrives in theaters March 3, 2023.

UPDATE: Paramount has pulled the poster "seemingly due to irregularities with the art," according to Liam Nolan. Can't imagine what those irregularities might be.
