Dusk is a haunting retro-inspired shooter that pays loving homage to classics such as Hexen, Quake, and even Doom. You play as a character who wakes up after having unhooked himself from a sacrificial holding area deep underground. He is now bent on laying waste to the dark denizens of the night that captured him.

Dusk has heavy horror themes and most certainly won't be for the faint of heart. Filled with buckets of blood and gore, Dusk can often shock you with some truly harrowing moments during its runtime. Along the way you will blast the baddies with a massive arsenal of weaponry while finding keys and secret areas. Many of your enemies can be taken down easily, however, that doesn't mean they aren't scary to encounter. Here are some of the best, scariest baddies from Dusk.

8 Leatherneck - Beware The Chainsaw

Leathernecks are the very first baddies that you encounter at the very start of the game. In fact, there are a few of them that attack you in the first room, chainsaw revved up and blaring. These lumberjack-looking enemies don a checkered flannel shirt and some bloodstained overalls.

These creatures are certainly terrifying mostly because they also wear burlap sacks over their heads. This, in combination with the relentless ferocity in which they chase you down with their chainsaws, makes them formidable and scary enemies to come up against.

7 Black Phillip - Something's Not Right With Him

What is it about black goats that bring out the major creep factor? Perhaps it's their association with dark magic and witchcraft, or perhaps it's because they can stare you down for a long period of time. Well, Dusk features a plethora of these creatures known here as Black Phillip.

These haunted goats look zombie-like, decaying from the inside out. They will chase you down in packs, knocking you back and dealing a good amount of damage. Just don't stare into their glowing, blood-red eyes for too long since it could bring a curse upon your character.

6 Possessed Scarecrow - No Birds Here

Scarecrows in and of themselves are often very frightening, but they can't help it, it's literally in their names. However, a possessed scarecrow is on a whole different level and Dusk features these creepy creatures in spades.

These possessed scarecrows aren't easy to take down either. The biggest scare factor comes from the fact that you never know which ones are actually going to hop off their stakes to attack you. Generally they only attack one at a time but the fright they give you is enough to keep you on edge for the rest of your play session.

5 Fork Maiden - Mind Your Table Manners

With a name like Fork Maiden you might not initially expect much for this creature, however, to underestimate them is a grave mistake. The Fork Maidens, which often appear in pairs, look like zombified women wearing dirty or bloodstained dresses. They emit a terrible hissing sound as they stalk you.

Interestingly, these creatures don't go down easily. You will often have to unload a full clip just to send them to meet their maker, even on the easier difficulty modes. They don't move fast but their sheer determination and unwavering stares will certainly add to your nightmares.

4 Wendigo - Is That Your Hat Or Your Head?

The humble Wendigo which first appears in episode 2 is simply disturbing to look at despite its more cartoonish nature. The Wendigos in Dusk look like large deer creatures with a massive skull and antlers adorned atop their heads. These creatures have one of the higher health pools in the game so it will be a challenge taking them down.

Wendigos might be the most "familiar" type of monster in Dusk but that doesn't mean they aren't downright terrifying. As they chase you around the level, they leave bloody footprints in their wake.

3 Horror - The Name Says It All

It's hard to think of a more apt name for these lanky aberrations of darkness. Part ghost, part ghoul, Horrors are not fun to encounter in Dusk. These humanoid creatures will not let you get away easy. One of the most unnerving features of the Horrors are their hollow eye sockets.

These monsters are easy to find since they breathe very heavily through their gaping mouth, but what they lack in stealth they make up for in frenetic damage output. Their attacks mostly consist of running at you while flopping their arms around.

2 Priestess - Stay In The Light

You would think that a creature called the Priestess might not be all that scary, that is until you see them up close. The Priestess creatures are not kind, in fact, they are quite devilish. The Priestess monsters don dark medieval armor with spiked helms. These creatures are very reminiscent of some of the tougher Heartless baddies from the Kingdom Hearts series.

Easily one of the more formidable foes in the game, they emit a terrible screeching sound before dashing towards you and swinging their weapon with frenzy and power.

1 Bone Monk - Let's Play Fetch

When you first think of an enemy named Bone Monk you might conjure up an image of a skeleton walking around in a robe, perhaps ready to attack you with magic. While you would be partially correct, the Bone Monks are floating specters of death who won't take kindly to your presence.

What makes these monsters so scary is the fact that their garments are drenched in fresh blood which makes you realize they have already successfully dealt with other battles.
