EA and Steam will have a cross-save feature that will let you play your Origin games on the new platform.

In case you haven’t heard, EA and Steam are getting back together after an 8-year hiatus. The news was announced on October 29th with a lovely tweet that made it out to be a sort of marriage invitation between these two gaming powerhouses.

Could this have been because of the ongoing platform war with Epic Games? Did EA get a sweet deal for bringing their library back to the Steam Store? We don’t know. What we do know is that EA games that were previously only available on Origin will be made available to purchase and play via Steam.

Starting with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. You can pre-order that game now, while Sims 4 and Unravel 3 will be arriving before the end of the year. Bigger titles like Apex Legends, FIFA 2020, and Battlefield V will come in the early part of 2020. EA’s subscription games service, EA Access, will also be available for those who prefer to just automate the process of acquiring more games than they can ever possibly play.

But what if you already own some of these games on Origin? Never fear. A new report from RespawnFirst confirms that there will be a cross-save function between Origin and Steam.

An uncovered patent describes how Origin and Steam will communicate to allow gamers to “log into the same online game from multiple different social networking platforms.” What this basically means is that you’ll be able to continue to use your Origin account on Steam so you don’t have to start a totally new profile in Apex Legends.

You’ll need to link your Origin and Steam accounts of course, but that’s nothing new in an age where Twitch, Discord, Steam, and many more are all becoming interconnected.

And because it’s EA, they will also keep track of “revenue generated, virtual currency bought or sold, time logged into online game, time logged into the first online platform (Origin), or number of friends or associates on the first (Origin) and second (Steam) online platform.” Again, no surprises there.

Expect this party to get started in the very near future.
