EarthBound fans rejoice as the cult classic along with EarthBound Beginnings is coming to Nintendo Switch later today for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. Mother has had a very loyal fanbase ever since it was first released back in the eighties, and now new players will be able to download and play it for no extra cost later today.

For those that haven't heard of the series, Earthbound Beginnings (or Mother as it's known in Japan) is the first game and follows the story of Ninten, a 12-year-old boy with psychic powers who travels across America trying to find melodies to stave off an alien invasion. EarthBound/ Mother 2 is a direct follow up with a similar plot, but follows main protagonist Ness instead.

JRPG fans will be very familiar with both EarthBound Beginnings and EarthBound's combat system, what with it being turn-based with pretty traditional HP and PP meters to look out for. Seeing as though the games are almost three decades old at this point, that does make sense.

While it's not the news that most Mother fans will have been hoping for, it's still pretty cool to see both games getting a port to a modern console. Most will have been hoping for a Mother 3 localization, but you never know, maybe if enough people play it, Nintendo will consider it. You have to hope.

The inclusion of EarthBound Beginnings and EarthBound as part of Nintendo Switch Online was quite an exciting announcement, but it was only one of many from today's Nintendo Direct. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is getting a bunch of remastered maps from across the Mario Kart franchise, the long-rumored Chrono Cross remaster was announced which includes a remastered soundtrack and other improvements, and the long wait is over as we're finally getting a new Mario Strikers game in Mario Strikers: Battle League.
