The more optimistic Nintendo fan might have expected news of an English localization of Mother 3 on the anniversary of the series, or at least the appearance of EarthBound Beginnings on the Nintendo Switch Online service. The fans who have spent years being disappointed in Nintendo's treatment of the series might be surprised to find that the anniversary was referenced at all.
The EarthBound/Mother event in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features party members, items and monsters from across the series. The EarthBound Beginnings/Mother spirits include characters like EVE, Ninten, and Teddy, the EarthBound/Mother 2 spirits include characters like Master Belch, Paula, and Poo, and the Mother 3 spirits include characters like Boney, Duster, and Kumatora.
The original Mother game was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System on July 27, 1989, but it would not see an official international release until 2015 when a translated version of the game made its way to the Wii U's Virtual Console. Mother 2 was released for the Super Nintendo and it would be localized as EarthBound in 1995. Mother 3 has yet to receive an official English localization, though there is a fan translation that is available online.
The EarthBound/Mother series hasn't received much love from Nintendo, outside of Ness and Lucas' appearances in the Super Smash Bros. series. There are many fans who still maintain a vigil regarding Mother 3, and it seems as if every E3 event is preceded by false rumors regarding a Mother 3 announcement, but it never comes. The fact that Nintendo is recognizing the 30th anniversary at all is a surprise.
Ness was one of the original playable characters in Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64, which means that the series will always have a place in Nintendo's crossover fighting series, but it seems as if that is as far as anyone is willing to go in keeping EarthBound/Mother alive.
The EarthBound/Mother event in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will start on July 26 and run for three days.
