Series co-creator Ed Boon says that Mortal Kombat 11 is the “end of the story” but there’s going to be “a big surprise coming next year.”

Well, we don’t really know what to make of this. In an interview with Terra Brasil during the Brasil Game Show (the Brazillian equivalent of E3), NetherRealm Studios founder Ed Boon let loose some very interesting statements.

Check out the video below, starting around the 2:48-minute mark. Boon gets asked if he can dish on any plans for the future, and this is what he had to say:

"The story of Mortal Kombat, we’re pretty much calling [Mortal Kombat 11] the end of the story… We’re certainly not through with Mortal Kombat. You know, there are more characters that are gonna come and we have a big surprise coming next year for Mortal Kombat."

Saying that the story of Mortal Kombat is over after 11 is a pretty bold statement, especially considering that you could have made similar arguments at the end of almost every game in the series. The plot of most Mortal Kombat games can be considered episodic, building on events from previous titles even though many of them were canonically wrapped up.

Boon might have misspoken and simply meant that the story for Mortal Kombat 11 is over. We’ll have to wait and see if he offers clarification.

As for the big surprise, most seem to think that it’s going to be Kombat Pack 2. The first Kombat Pack has seen the slow introduction of new characters, with Shang Tsung leading the charge that will eventually end with the arrival of Spawn in March of 2020. Several classic Mortal Kombat characters were also part of the Kombat Pack, including Nightwolf and Sindel, but there are plenty of other Mortal Kombat characters that can flesh out a Kombat Pack 2. Stryker, Quan Chi, or Sheeva would make perfect additions to Mortal Kombat 11’s roster.

A Kombat Pack 2 would also allow for even more special guest appearances. The first Kombat Pack was rumored to contain Ash from Evil Dead, Sweet Tooth from the Twisted Metal series, and even Doomguy. It turned out to be fake news, but maybe they can appear in Kombat Pack 2.

We can only hope.
