NetherRealm Studios is one of the more predictable developers in the industry. It has two IPs to its name, and alternates between them in terms of development. However, this year has seen fans wondering if the studio will break tradition, either by releasing a spinoff based on the Mortal Kombat or Injustice universes, or by releasing two MK titles back to back. Some even think a third IP could be at play. However, it seems we can put some of the wilder theories to rest, thanks to an AMA hosted by Ed Boon.

It seems Boon was feeling a bit chatty last evening, as he Tweeted, "Ask me stuff. $8 per question." Among the first few questions was someone asking for a hint about what the studio's next game would be. But instead of a hint, Boon was pretty direct in replying, "I3 or MK12" – meaning Injustice or Mortal Kombat 12. While this isn't the most surprising revelation, it at least removes any theories about the introduction of a new IP.

However, if you've been following Ed Boon on Twitter, you'll also know that his Tweets can sometimes be cheeky and cryptic. Perhaps Boon could also be talking about the return of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. If you think about it, the base is already set up – After the events of MK 11, Liu Kang is now in charge of creating the timeline. He bungles it, causing a merger between the MK and DC universes.

Of course, we won't know for sure until NetherRealm reveals it or it gets leaked. However, there were some fun little tid-bits that we got from the rest of Boon's AMA. Firstly, Boon addressed the sheer lack of 3D era characters in the recent games, saying, "That is something we will soon fix." Speaking of the 3D era, the ridiculously revealing costumes for the female characters from that time are thankfully "not likely" to return.

We also learned that Boon would love to make a new Konquest mode, as well as a Director's Cut for Mortal Kombat 4 which would include everything that was removed from the final version.
