Mortal Kombat director Ed Boon has revealed Twisted Metal's Sweet Tooth has been "damn close" to joining the fighting series on multiple occasions.

Fortnite and Super Smash Bros. might get most of the credit for crossover characters, but they aren't the only games to do it. Mortal Kombat has also had its fair share of guest fighters, with Joker and Terminator becoming a part of the latest game's roster. Predator, Leatherface, and even God of War's Kratos have also been a part of Mortal Kombat games in the past.

Ed Boon recently revealed on Twitter that Kratos isn't the only PlayStation mascot NeatherRealm has considered adding to Mortal Kombat. Apparently, Twisted Metal's terrifying clown Sweet Tooth has also been seriously considered for the series. “Sweet Tooth has also (more than once) been DAMN close to being a guest fighter in MK games,” Boon tweeted.

Boon's tweet wasn't out of the blue. The creative director shared a photo of him with David Jaffe who worked as a designer on God of War and Twisted Metal. On top of the revelation that Sweet Tooth has almost been a Mortal Kombat character on multiple occasions, Boon also revealed that he and Jaffe discussed the possibility of creating an arcade version of Twisted Metal for Midway Games.

Twisted Metal has been making headlines recently following confirmation that the classic PlayStation series is getting its own TV series. Anthony Mackie, who plays Falcon and now Captain America in the MCU, is the first cast member to have been confirmed for the show. There's also talk of a new Twisted Metal game being announced to coincide with the TV show which will reportedly be here at some point in 2023.

If Twisted Metal is getting a new game in 2023, it will have been more than ten years by that point since the last title in the series. As for Mortal Kombat, fans of the franchise might not have as long to wait for a new game as they might think. Although it was previously rumored that NeatherRealm may be working on Injustice 3, it now seems as if it is actually working on Mortal Kombat 12. If so, that would be the perfect place for Sweet Tooth to make his MK debut.
