After years of literally doing nothing, the world of football simulation video games has suddenly been turned upside down. First was Konami's disastrous shift from PES to eFootball, resulting in nightmarish versions of our favourite players; then FIFA and EA parting ways after 28 long years. While we still have to see how the latter turns out, we already know that eFootball's first season has been worse than Norwich this year. With season 2 coming up at the beginning of next month, Konami will be taking a short break to regroup, and hopefully come back stronger.RELATED: Who Let eFootball Into The 2022 Commonwealth Games?“The events and campaigns for Season 1 have come to an end, and today marks the start of the pre-season period for Season 2,” said Konami. “Version 1.1.0 update will include improvements of win/loss decision-making in online matches, enhancements of server capacity and preparation for future initiatives such as data sharing between console and mobile.

“The maintenance period will be from May 30 to June 2. During the maintenance period trial matches with some leagues and clubs will still be playable, with 2 new options added to trial matches: ‘Beginner’ difficulty level and 10 mins match time. After the maintenance is completed, Season 2 is scheduled to kick-off on June 16, which will be accompanied by various in-game events. Further details will be announced in-game, on the official website and on this Twitter account.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the long maintenance period and thank you for your patience.”

It can't be stressed how much of a nosedive Konami's football sim took with its shift to the new eFootball live-game formula. While the concept seems solid – and maybe even one that could have dethroned FIFA – the execution was just abysmal. Not only were the game's animations and player likeness completely off the ball, but even the basic gameplay was bottom-drawer. With FIFA – soon to be EA Sports FC – boasting gameplay mechanics that cement it as the best football sim in the market, eFootball's first season saw it claim the title of worst reviewed game of 2021.

Hopefully, this short break ensures that season 2 will be much better – Konami could do with Big Sam Allardyce right about now.
