The developers of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy officially confirmed the game is not sharing its game engine with Marvel’s Avengers, once again distinguishing both projects from one another.

It’s one month until Guardians of the Galaxy launch, and despite plenty of previews highlighting the game’s unique mechanics, many still comparing the title to Avengers in search of similarities. While some fans may believe that Guardians should be an “extended” DLC to Avengers rather than a standalone game, the devs from Eidos Montreal gave fans a strong reason why it’s not. Turns out, two games are using quite different engines at their core — with Guardians being built on the same engine as Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

Eidos gave a direct answer in a Twitter discussion, clarifying that both Marvel titles were not made on the same engine. One user made an assumption that Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers use the Foundation game engine. These tools were used in several Crystal Dynamics projects, including Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Considering both studios have worked closely before, the person wrongly believed that Guardians may use some assets like character models and animations from Avengers, cutting down the workload.

However, it’s not the case here. According to the team, Guardians of the Galaxy uses Dawn Engine, earlier implemented in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Therefore, Eidos finally got some closure on the matter, shutting down skeptics for good.

Thus far, Guardians of the Galaxy looks very much opposite from Avengers, focusing on a linear story-driven adventure in a band of bright personalities instead of being a live-service robot brawler. There will be only one protagonist under your control in the game, but you can customize and level up other members of your squad to use them in combat indirectly.

Guardians of the Galaxy has already gone gold and will be arriving on time on October 26. You can join a wild ride across the galaxy on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch via the Cloud.
