If you were wondering just how exactly you can swap Eivor’s gender mid-game in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, here’s a video that shows how it’s done.

Last week, we found out that you could switch between male and female Eivor while in the middle of your playthrough in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Not only that, but you could basically change Eivor’s gender whenever you wanted by just going into the menu options.

That still seemed to raise more questions than answers, but now we’ve got an actual video showing the process and it seems pretty darn simple.

The video comes from @AccessTheAnimus, an Assassin's Creed fan Twitter account that really likes to go deep into the weeds of Assassin's Creed lore. In this case, we're dealing more with simple game mechanics, but it ties into the Valhalla story too.

Here's how it works. First, you just go into Eivor's inventory screen and navigate to the DNA Stream Selection. From there, you just pick whether you want to play as male or female Eivor, and the main character model swaps when you get back to the inventory screen. It's just that easy.

The deal here is that the Animus System that dives into ancient memories via DNA has trouble with Eivor, whose sequence has been damaged to the point where the system can't determine for certain what gender Eivor was. Valhalla's story will let you play as either gender without any difference to the plot, and both genders are considered canon. This is a big difference to Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which instead featured two completely separate characters with differences in story elements.

While it's certainly nice that you can be whatever gender you prefer in Valhalla, the feature does come at a difficult time for Ubisoft as it wrestles with a workplace culture that marginalizes women and often protects male predators. We recently discovered thanks to a Bloomberg report that Ubisoft execs repeatedly shot down the idea of Assassin's Creed Odyssey feature a female protagonist and instead added a male character as well.

An internal investigation into sexual harassment allegations has also resulted in the firing of a PR director, the latest Ubisoft executive to be culled as the company continues to clean house.
