In some ways, Elden Ring is a little like a Pokemon journey. You travel across the land, facing influential people to get their respective marks. You collect creatures that can be summoned into a fight. You worry about elemental weaknesses. If you make eye contact with someone on the road, they're likely to come after you. Yeah, just a few similarities.

The people you have to face for your great runes in Elden Ring are perhaps a little less professional and a lot more hostile than the average Gym Leader, but it does make you wonder what kind of teams they would be rocking in the Pokemon world. Aside from Mimic Tear and Ditto, too easy.

10 Godrick The Grafted - Dragon Type

Elden Ring boss Godrick The Grafted with Pokemon Dracozolt and Hydreigon.

A man who apparently misunderstood the concept of 'armed and dangerous,' it's tempting just to give Godrick The Grafted a Machamp and be done with it, though that would not fully do the man justice. He makes it quite clear that dragons are one of his favourite things. There are even a few dragons who share his rather unique attributes. Given their shared issues of ill-fitting body parts, Dracozolt seems like a natural choice, and Hydreigon has more than the average number of appendages.

The one concern with Godrick is that while he's clearly a fan of dragons, he doesn't exactly treat them with respect. Hopefully, he wouldn't be running around with half a Dragonite stitched to his back by the time you got there.

9 Erdtree Avatar - Grass Type

Elden Ring Erdtree Avatar boss with Nuzleaf, Alolan Exeggutor and Trevenant.

Would it be strange to have a Pokemon battle with a huge, mobile tree? Well, you can catch God and make him fight people's pets, so most things seem potentially on the table. Given its woody nature, the Erdtree Avatar is definitely a plant type and could sport a team on that theme.

There is Nuzleaf to start, an Alolan Exeggutor with Solar Beam, so you're not missing the golden light of death the Avatar is so fond of. Finally, there's Trevenant, as the two look like they could be cousins.

8 Rennala, Queen Of The Full Moon - Psychic Type

Elden Ring Rennala boss with Gothitelle, Lunatone, Musharna and Hatterene.

Carian Queen and sometime headmistress of Raya Lucaria, Rennala is synonymous with the moon, the rebirth rune, divorce, and really ostentatious hats.

Given the magic and the floating, Psychic seems like a natural choice for her. This means she can keep on-brand with a Lunatone. The part of her Juvenile Scholars could be taken by Gothitelle, who would have more than enough psychic power to keep her floating around. Musharna and its strange, unborn appearance suit her beloved amber egg. Finally, Hatterne rounds off the team because they obviously share a taste in headgear.

7 Rykard, Lord Of Blasphemy - Poison Type

Elden Ring's Rykard boss with Seviper, Salazzle and Arbok.

Everyone who knows Rykard knows what kind of creatures are his favourite. Snakes, snakes, and more snakes. He's so fond of reptiles that he's been eaten by one. This makes poison the logical typing for his team.

Seviper and Arbok are easy picks. Given his volcano location, and the number of his scaly children who do sport legs, Salandit and Salazzle could round out his roster. You can be sure that the run-up to his battle would be a rough one. Recusant trainers sound absolutely awful.

6 Malenia, Blade Of Miquella - Bug Type

Elden Ring Malenia boss with Pokemon, Scyther, Parasect and Beautifly.

She is Malenia, Blade Of Miquella, and she's never known defeat. You might have heard the name once or fifty times. Given that goopy red fungal rot isn't an official Pokemon type, it's her butterfly motif that's landed her the spot of a bug-type trainer.

All of her team could represent her attributes individually. Scyther for efficiently cutting things, Beautifly for her Aeonian butterflies, and Parasect for horrifying fungal plagues. Presumably, at least if she was too much to handle, you could wait for a mysterious trainer with a pot on his head to turn up and do all the work for you.

5 Draconic Tree Sentinel - Electric Type, Mostly

Elden Ring Draconic Tree Sentinel boss with Alolan Golem and Rapidash.

Standing in between you and Leyndell is a big fellow on a horse, and he's not like the ones you encountered before. The name Draconic Tree Sentinel might allude to a whole different type, but lightning is the star of the show.

An Alolan Golem accurately recreates the combination of electricity and the capacity to hit like a freight train. Just when you think you have him figured out, there'd be a fire horse in there too. Regardless of the game, that one is a bit of a surprise.

4 Starscourge Radahn - Ground Type

Elden Ring Radahn boss with Pokemon, Mudbray.

General Radahn, shardbearer, son of Radagon and Malenia's least favourite person, is a little hard to place with a Pokemon type. Despite being built like a house, the Starscourge isn't all brute force. He is a master of gravity magic, which doesn't directly correspond to any type. One thing you can be sure of, Radahn loves his very small horse. The gravity magic was only a means of being able to keep his little horse, Leonard.

The use of earth-manipulating powers and the existence of Mudbray was enough to put Radahn firmly in the position of the Ground-type gym leader. If Leonard had been a Mudbray, he probably wouldn't have needed the gravity magic at all.

3 Mohg, Lord Of Blood - Dark Type

Elden Ring Mohg boss with an Alolan Muk, a Scraggy and a Zoroark.

Omen, eldritch deity devotee, and obsessive kidnapper - Mohg is not a very nice man. Given his penchant for all things sinister, the Dark type seems to suit him.

He has some rather dishonest servants, such as Varré, so deceptive pokemon like Zoroark kicks off his lineup. Alolan Muk reflects Moghwyn Palace's lovely blood lakes. Finally, Scraggy is taking the place of the red albinaurics given their shared characteristics of a big head and a vacant stare. Note: Please don't kill lots of Scraggies for runes.

2 Fire Giant - Fire Type

Elden Ring Fire Giant boss with Pokemon Magmortar and Emboar.

Fire Giant is a little too easy. Easy to place, that is, not to fight. He's the last of his kind and tends a flame that could burn the Erdtree. He's also huge and a real trial to get into a drawn-out battle with.

Perhaps he might want to try and replicate his lost kind by populating his roster with big fiery Pokemon. With that in mind, re-enacting the war on the giants might be a bit crueler than even just killing him in the Elden Ring fight.

1 Godfrey, First Elden Lord - Normal Type

Elden Ring boss Godfrey, First Elden Lord with Pokemon Ursaluna, Bewear, and Pyroar.

Lord Godfrey, or Hoarah Loux. Father of the Tarnished, cast out by Queen Marika. He's back, and much like a gym leader, he's out to test you.

Given it's Godfrey, a lion had to be part of his team. Pyroar is standing in for Serosh in this case and hopefully won't suffer the same fate as the spirit lion. Ursaluna keeps the levels of strength and intimidation high whilst also being able to learn Giga Impact, so you can get the earth-shaking experience of Hoarah Loux. Finally, there's Bewear, because both he and the Pokemon try and hug you as a means of causing massive bodily harm.
