FromSoftware has perfected the art of creating bosses, as well as the infuriating battles that come after. From legendary bosses such as Bloodborne's Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower to Dark Souls' Nameless King, Elden Ring has continued this streak of legendary bosses.

With over 100 bosses in Elden Ring, some optional bosses stand out due to sheer difficulty. Whether they go through mid-battle evolutions or have multiple phases, these bosses are certainly memorable.

10 Starscourge Radahn

Elden Ring Starscourge Radahn Boss Fight

You know a boss fight is difficult when you can summon numerous allies to fight with and for you. As soon as you enter the ring, there are summoning signs dotted all over the place - it's highly recommended to summon all of them.

Starscourge Radahn shoots magical arrows at you the second you enter and has a wide area of attack and mobility (his poor horse, though). He can coat his dual blades with lightning, bringing it down to deal insane damage. After you get his health down to a certain amount, he'll jump up into the air and disappear before bearing down at you like a comet.

9 Dragonlord Placidusax

Dragonlord Placidusax coils its twin heads as it prepares to rain down lightning.

Located in Crumbling Farum Azula, you have to lie down in a coffin to access this boss. After an epic cutscene where the boss arena is literally being remade, you sit up to find yourself face-to-face with Dragonlord Placidusax.

Their golden breaths of flame quickly turn into death beams, along with the ability to summon red lightning. Dragonlord Placidusax will disappear into ash in the middle of the fight before reappearing from the sky with a sweeping attack using his electrified claw. This battle is as epic as it is deadly.

8 Commander Niall

Elden Ring Commander Niall Boss Fight

Although an optional boss, Commander Niall stands in the way of you getting a quest item, namely the left half of the Haligtree Medallion. Located in Castle Sol, Commander Niall first summons two spectral knights, of which you better deal with first.

Commander Niall creates whirlwinds that you must dodge since they eat a large portion of your HP. Not only can he deal frostbite damage, but he can also summon lightning when he performs a stomp.

7 Lichdragon Fortissax

Lichdragon Fortissax prepares a vicious lightning attack.

Lichdragon Fortissax is an optional boss but is necessary to defeat to complete Fia's questline. In Deeproot Depths, the 'Touch Fia' option will be available, wherein you'll be transported to the boss arena.

The annoying part is that whenever you get close to the boss, you can't stay too long under it, or you'll get electrocuted since its body is coated in lightning. The boss can even throw lightning spears which mete out extraordinary amounts of damage. Patience is definitely a boon when dealing with this boss.

6 Astel, Naturalborn Of The Void

Elden Ring Astel Naturalborn Of The Void Boss Fight

The oddest and creepiest boss award in Elden Ring goes to Astel, Naturalborn of the Void. After traversing past the easily missable area of the Lake of Rot, you hitch a ride on a coffin that'll take you closer to the boss area.

This twisted dragonfly-like creature shoots laser beams and slams its beaded tail onto the ground to hit you. What's more, it can summon portals that fling large boulders at you, as well as snap its sharp pincers to stab you. It can even fling you up in the air and throw you down hard and send meteor showers your way. Brutal.

5 Rykard, Lord Of Blasphemy

Elden Ring God-Devouring Serpent Rykard Boss Fight

This boss is the stuff of nightmares. Found in Mount Gelmir near Volcano Manor, this boss fight is similar to Yhorm the Giant in Dark Souls 3 and the Storm King from Demon's Souls since it gives you the boss-defeating Serpent-Hunter Great Spear located by the arena's entrance.

After defeating the snake with the spear (careful, it spews poison), Rykard makes his eerie appearance, taking out his sword from the snake's mouth. With new sword attacks, Rykard sends a flurry of flaming skulls to chase after you. He can also bring his sword down, causing a cataclysmic hellfire that you must dodge.

4 Malenia, Blade Of Miquella

Elden Ring Malenia Blade Of Miquella/ Goddess Of Rot Boss Fight

Slapped onto Elden Ring promotional posters and looking fierce, you'll finally face Malenia, Blade of Miquella, when you reach the Consecrated Snowfield. Although the boss is optional, let's be real here, we all want her armour set and weapon.

You really have to dodge her attacks during the fight, as every hit allows her to recover her health. In the second phase, she metamorphoses into the Goddess of Rot, where she can deal Scarlet Rot damage if you stick too close for too long but is more susceptible to being staggered. Watch out, though, because she still can regain health if her blows hit.

3 Mohg, Lord Of Blood

Elden Ring Mohg Lord Of Blood Boss Fight

Looking every bit a pagan god, Mohg, Lord of Blood, is found in the underground area of Mohgwyn Palace. Despite being optional, it's great for rune farming since he drops 420,000 runes.

With his gigantic trident, he deals large damage with his wide swings. Mohg also uses spells, scattering splashes of blood that set the ground aflame. Wings unfurl from his back mid-fight, and he can use a spell that can take your health to replenish his.

2 Elemer Of The Briar

Elden Ring Elemer Of The Briar Boss Fight

Elemer of the Briar can be found at the Altus Plateau in the Shaded Castle and performs a brutal shield slam as soon as he sees you.

The worst thing about this boss is that his sword can extend past its normal area of attack, glowing red and giving him extra range. Note that this boss can grab you, so better dodge out of the way when you see it about to happen. Whenever he starts glowing red, smashing the dodge button as quickly as you can is best.

1 Abductor Virgins

Elden Ring Abductor Virgin Duo Boss Fight

The Iron Maiden-like, pendulum-swinging Abductor Virgins are another example of pure nightmare fuel. Found in Volcano Manor, you actually have to let yourself be captured by an Abductor Virgin at the lowest level of Raya Lucaria Academy, where it'll send you close to the boss arena.

One boss is equipped with a wheeled blade, while the other has a pair of swinging sickles. The latter will throw its blades at you, but both will spin around like a deadly ballerina. Of course, this time, don't let yourself get captured.
