Quick Links

Larval Tears are items that let you respec in Elden Ring. To put it simply, this means letting you reallocate all of the points that you've spent leveling up, allowing you to change up your build if you want to try out new playstyles or refund some misplaced stat points.

Respeccing will use one of your Larval Tears up, and there are limited Larval Tears in the game, so use them wisely. Hopefully, unless you are a serial-respeccer, you should find that there are enough Larval Tears in the game to correct any major mistakes or help you reassess your build when needed. The sections below will tell you where to get them - be careful, though, some of them are far harder to get than others.

Which Enemies Drop Larval Tears?

Elden Ring Runebear closely grasping a player

As you might expect from an item that lets you change yourself in such a drastic way, many of the Larval Tears in Elden Ring are dropped by enemies that transform.

Some of these enemies are weaklings that you might ignore entirely, while others are already strong and will upset your victory by transforming into something even stronger upon defeat.

You will only get one Larval Tear from these enemies, they do not respawn.

How To Locate

Limgrave

Wandering Noble

Runebear

Head to the Agheel Lake South Site of Grace and head east. The Wandering Noble is easily spotted as he is alone and standing still on the edge of a cliff.

Liurnia of the Lakes

Giant Crayfish

Grafted Scion

You'll find a group of four Giant Crayfish near the Folly on the Lake Site of Grace if you head north. You'll find that only one out of the four is awake and alert - this is the enemy that drops the Larval Tear.

Caelid

Wandering Noble

Troll

You'll find this Wandering Noble near the graveyard south of the Caelid Highway South Site of Grace and west of the Cathedral of Dragon Communion.

Altus Plateau

Wandering Noble

Lion Guardian

You'll find this Wandering Noble in the ruins to the east of the Minor Erdtree in the region. Try heading south from the Windmill Village Site of Grace.

Consecrated Snowfield

Wandering Noble

Runebear

There are three Wandering Nobles together located very close to the Inner Consecrated Snowfield Site of Grace, slightly to the southeast. The enemy that transforms is half-buried in the snow.

Mt. Gelmir

Putrid Corpse

Wormface

In the encampment right next to the Road of Iniquity Site of Grace. The Putrid Corpse will be on fire.

Many of these enemies are very difficult to take down - be sure you don't have too many runes that you could lose.

In addition to the transforming enemies above, there are some enemies in the game that will just outright drop Larval Tears. These are, with one exception, all Silver Sphere enemies - the gigantic, smooth balls that love to roll at you with incredible speed.

There is one Silver Sphere enemy in Nokron, Eternal City, and three in Nokstella, Eternal City. They will always drop a Larval Tear when killed, but only once - while the Silver Spheres will respawn like most other enemies in the game, they will not drop more Tears.

You will also get two Larval Tears when you beat the Mimic Tear boss. Only the version in Nokron, Eternal City will drop one, the one in the Haligtree will not.

Some of these enemies, such as the Runebear in Limgrave, are close enough to summoning points to use Spirit Ashes. Try to suit your choice of summon to the transformed version of the enemy.

Where To Purchase Larval Tears

Elden Ring_Larval Tear 5_ Siofra River

There are two Larval Tears available for purchase in the game:

  • The first is available from Pidia, a merchant that you can find inside Caria Manor. To reach Pidia, you need to first complete the area, beating Royal Knight Loretta. Head outside her boss arena, head directly to the left, and use the platforms to drop down into a new area of the Manor.
  • The second is available from the Nomadic Merchant, who sets up shop in Siofra River, near the brazier puzzle. To get to him, you'll need to climb the scaffolding in the middle of the area and platform over to the nearby connected caves. You'll hear the merchant before you see him, probably.

Both Larval Tears cost 3,000 runes to purchase.

All Larval Tear Loot Locations

Elden Ring Larval Tear 4 Village of the Albinaurics

There are also a few Larval Tears in the game that you can just pick up.

  • The earliest Larval Tear that you can loot is in Liurnia of the Lakes - you'll find it in the graveyard in the Village of the Albinaurics, which can be reached by heading underneath the large landmass to the southwest of Liurnia of the Lakes.
  • There are also two Larval Tears found easily in Nokron, Eternal City. To get to this area, you need to defeat Radahn and then enter the deep hole that appears in Limgrave.
    • Explore the buildings near the Nokron, Eternal City Site of Grace to find one, but be very careful of the enemies around there.
    • The second is found just before the Mimic Tear boss fight, inside a small structure that has Silver Tears dropping on top of you when you approach. Be wary.

A Larval Tear also serves as the reward for one of Elden Ring's painting quests. First, find the Resurrection Painting at the Artist's Shack - this is located just to the north of the entrance to the Carian Study Hall on the map and has a Site of Grace nearby.

Once you have the painting in your inventory, you should be able to find a ghost somewhere in the graveyard to the north of Caria Manor. You'll have to beat Royal Knight Loretta to find this - check the link in the preceding section for more details. Talk to the ghost, and you'll receive the Larval Tear.

How To Respec Your Character In Elden Ring

Elden Ring Small Details: Reallocating At Rennala as she holds her egg.

Once you have your Larval Tears, you'll want to use them to respec, right? To do this, you'll need to have beaten Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, who is the boss of the Academy of Raya Lucaria. Afterward, you can interact with her to change your appearance or respec your stats.

Every respec costs a single Larval Tear and there are a few rules that you have to follow:

  • Your level will not change, meaning you must invest the same amount of points as your current build. If you have leveled up 80 times, you must allocate 80 points, for example.
  • You cannot make a stat go below the level you started with. This means you cannot plunge a stat below its initial level to get more points to use elsewhere.

When you have allocated your stats, pressing "confirm" will solidify your choices and consume your Larval Tear.
