They're all Great Runes, but some are greater than others.

One of these endings can be achieved by traveling deep into the bowels of the Lands Between and completing an impressively cryptic side quest that will see you become the famed Lord of Frenzied Flame. Undoubtedly one of Elden Ring’s darker endings, this quest will take you through some of the game’s most unique and haunting locations.

Updated February 26th, 2024 by Andrew Scariati: We've updated this guide with further details about Elden Ring's Frenzied Flame ending – including how to reverse it once you lock in. Reversing the Frenzied Flame ending includes two of the game's hardest bosses, Malenia and Placidusax, so be prepared for a fight.

How To Find The Frenzied Flame

Map location for the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds in Elden Ring

Throughout your time in the Lands Between, you may have heard of the Frenzied Flame – a parasitic force slowly moving through the world.

However, while several characters will mention the flame, it is decidedly hard to find.

To locate the Frenzied Flame and get the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending, you must first travel to Leyndell, The Royal Capital, a mid to late-game area.

From here, you must locate the Subterranean Shunning Grounds, a sewer under the capital.

Once at the Lower Capital Church Site of Grace, journey into the part of the city that is covered by a set of giant dragon wings.

From there, you can find a well; jump down to enter the Subterranean Shunning Grounds.

To reach the Frenzied Flame you need to travel to the lowest point in the Shunning Grounds.

This area can be confusing, but ultimately you must traverse the sewers until you come across a cramped lift.

At the bottom of this lift, you will find a Site of Grace. Rest here.

From this Site of Grace, push forward until you reach this area’s boss, Mohg, The Omen.

This Mohg is a weaker version of an enemy you will find in a different area of the game.

However, this Mohg can still be a challenge and guards one last hurdle to unlocking the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending.

The next step in the Frenzied Flame questline can be rather confusing.

After defeating this version of Mohg, go to the back of the boss room and hit the wall.

The illusionary wall should evaporate once hit. Go through it.

This next part will require some serious parkour skills.

After Mohg you must descend further, jumping down a series of wooden planks to reach the bottom of another chasm.

Take the drops and jumps slowly – always look for the safest route. Do not try to skip down levels, or you may die from fall damage.

Once at the bottom, claim the Site of Grace.

Interacting With The Frenzied Flame

At this Site of Grace, talk with Melina.

She will beg you to leave this area and not to approach the Frenzied Flame. If the Frenzied Flame ending is what you want, you must ignore her warnings.

Next, unequip all your gear, weapons, armor, and everything in between.

This is the last step before you're locked in to get the Frenzied Flame ending; now is your last chance before you cross the point of no return.

Once you're completely unequipped of gear, approach the Frenzy-covered door and choose the option to open it.

A short cutscene will show the Tarnished coming face-to-face with the Three Fingers, an ominous and deific figure in the Lands Between.

With this cutscene, you have locked yourself into the Frenzied Flame ending.

After beating the final boss, approach the statue and choose “Become the Lord of Frenzied Flame” to bring chaos to the Lands Between.

Reversing The Frenzied Flame

Malenia, Blade of Miquella, putting her helmet on in Elden Ring

To undo your actions in the Subterranean Shunning Grounds you will have to go through a number of steps, defeating two of Elden Ring’s most challenging bosses along the way.

Firstly, you must complete Millicent’s full questline. This quest can be started in the Church of Plague in Caelid and will take you to an area known as the Haligtree.

Having completed Millicent’s journey, you will receive the Unalloyed Gold Needle, an item that must be taken to Malenia's boss room in the Haligtree.

Once Malenia has been defeated, use the needle on the crimson flower that appears on the spot of her corpse. In doing so, you will receive Miquella's Needle, an item that can only be used once.

To use this item, and in turn reverse the Frenzied Flame ending, you must travel to Crumbling Farum Azula, the game’s final area. Once here, go to the bottom of the floating ruins.

Here, you will be prompted to lie down and thus be transported to Placidusax's boss arena.

Placidusax is one of the hardest Dragon bosses in Elden Ring, so be prepared for a difficult battle.

You do not have to beat Placidusax if you solely want to reverse the Flame of Frenzy, but the boss fight gives access to a fantastic Dragon Communion incantation.

Using Miquella's Needle (via your inventory) within Placidusax's arena will reverse your actions and cancel out the Lord of Frenzied Flame Ending.
