An excellent example of this is Margit's Shackle, an item you can obtain by heading off the beaten path that can help you overcome one of the game's more formidable foes Margit, the Fell Omen. While this item won't completely trivialize the encounter, it is still a tremendous help and can allow you to save precious resources for the second stage of the battle.

Where To Find Margit's Shackle

To obtain Margit's Shackle, you must first reach Murkwater Cave, which you can get to by taking several different routes. For the purpose of this guide, however, we will be guiding you to the cave's entrance as if you are coming from Dragon-Burnt Ruins in Limgrave, where the Flying Dragon Agheel boss fight is located.

When at the Dragon-Burnt Ruins, look for a narrow path to the left in the shallow, murky water and head towards it. You should see a bridge with several hanging bodies strewn underneath it, pass underneath it, and follow the pathway up. Here, you will get invaded by an NPC, which you will have to defeat to continue. This encounter can be particularly challenging for some players, especially if you have barely leveled, so be prepared for it!

After defeating the NPC, continue following the path up until you see an opening on the left-hand side, slightly obstructed by a tree. Head inside to discover Murkwater Cave. Once inside, you will see a couple of bandits with branching paths to the left and right. Deal with the bandits how you see fit, and then take the right pathway to come across a golden fog door leading to a boss room.

Once you have passed through the fog gate, you may notice something a bit out of the ordinary. No grotesque beast is charging you, but instead, a very temping chest is waiting for you in the middle of the room. Walk over to the chest and crack it open to have Patches jump down and scold you for opening other people's belongings without their permission, starting the boss fight.

However, unlike most boss fights, after you drop Patches' health halfway, he will forfeit the match and tell you to stop. You must let Patches live here, so please resist any urges you may have here. After he's done talking to you, he will ask for your forgiveness. Respond with the "Forgive and forget" option, then speak with him once more. He will mention having a shop opened up the next time you visit and urges you to stop back later.

With that queue, head to the start of the Murkwater Cave and rest at the Site of Grace. After your brief rest, run back to the area where you fought Patches and speak with him once more. He will now allow you to purchase items from him, with Margit's Shackle being one of them. Purchase Margit's Shackle for the steep price of 5,000 Runes, then head to Castleward Tunnel to take him on with your newly obtained item.

How To Use Margit's Shackle

Elden Ring Margit the Fell Omen

Margit's Shackle is a consumable item, which means you will have to place it in your Quick Item Slots or your Pouch via the Equipment menu. Once you have the item readied, you can now use it on Margit to gain a significant advantage during the fight. Think of this item in a similar vein as the Music Box from Bloodborne that was helpful against Father Gascoigne. Much like the Music Box, however, you must be made aware of limitations beforehand.

Here are a few crucial things you must know about Margit's Shackle to use it effectively:

  • Margit's Shackle will temporarily stun Margit for roughly three seconds, allowing you to get several uncontested hits in.
  • You can only use Margit's Shackle twice an encounter, meaning once you incapacitate him twice, the item will be ineffective until your next meeting (if you were to die).
  • Margit's Shackle will only work on Margit during the first phase of the encounter, so be sure to use it then, rather than trying to save it for the latter portion of the fight.

While this item won't guarantee you victory, it has the potential to save precious resources such as Flasks, FP, and more. As long as you're patient and utilize Margit's Shackle to its full potential, his first phase shouldn't give you much of an issue!
