Elden Ring got a patch today. Update 1.06 offered several new features, such as the return of long-distance rolling for having a light equipment load as well as greater range on summon signs. It also offered a somewhat softer response for players using illegal items, adding a new warning message before enacting a ban.

As per the patch notes, players inventories will now mark illegal items and offer a warning message telling players to get rid of ‘em. Illegal items are most often the result of mods or editors re-enabling previously cut content, such as the infamous Deathbed Smalls.

Soon after Elden Ring’s launch, players dove into the game’s files and discovered loads of cut content that never made it into the final release. One such item was called the Deathbed Smalls, which was previously part of Fia’s armor set. One player was known to invade other people’s games, drop the Deathbed Smalls, and then leave. Anyone unfortunate enough to pick up the dropped item would suddenly find themselves on the raw end of Elden Ring’s anti-cheat with a 180-day ban.

Trading or dropping illegal items was patched out in update 1.04, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some illegal items still floating around out there. The latest patch makes it so "possession and usage of these unauthorized items will be subject to warning or penalty after a certain period of time."

In addition to the new warning system, update 1.06 also offered a balance pass. Rivers of Blood, one of the most popular and powerful swords in Elden Ring, has finally been nerfed. Corpse Piler, the sword’s unique skill, now deals less damage and less bleed buildup. The Bloodhound’s Step Ash of War has also been nerfed with less travel distance, less invincibility frames, and reduced performance with repeated use.

There were also a few suggestions taken from the PvP community. Both the Glintstone Pebble and Glintstone Dart now deal less damage and have reduced stagger potential, but both have greater range. It’s not everything the Elden Ring PvP community was hoping for, but it’s a sign that FromSoft is at least taking PvP balance seriously.
