All it took was one Twitter thread for Elon Musk to donate $1 million dollars to plant a million trees, blowing all other donations at the time out of the water and earning him the name "Treelon."

#TeamTrees is a campaign created on October 25, 2019, by YouTuber MrBeast and YouTuber and former NASA engineer Mark Rober in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation to plant 20 million trees by January 1, 2020. For every dollar donated, one tree will get planted somewhere in the world before December of 2022. The goal is to plant the trees in strategic areas around the globe, based on the type of tree and the climate in the area it needs to be planted, in order to combat growing environmental concerns.

On October 25, MrBeast posted a video on YouTube announcing the fundraiser, which now has over 28 million views at the time this article was written. Starting as a challenge from his fans for reaching 20 million subscribers on YouTube, MrBeast realized that planting 20 million trees by himself was an impossible task, so he reached out to the internet and the Arbor Day Foundation to help.

Unsurprisingly, the YouTube community rallied behind this initiative, and YouTubers such as TheOdd1sOut, JaidenAnimations, Arin Hanson, and jacksepticeye made some sizable donations. CEO of Twitter Jack Dorsey joined in on the fun with his large donation of 150,000 trees, and CEO of YouTube Susan Wojcicki donated 200,000 trees and made a video with MrBeast about the project.

At the time of this posting, #TeamTrees has had over 10 million trees donated, more than halfway to their stretch goal.

#TeamTrees 10M Trees Planted

By October 28, #TeamTrees had made enough noise on Twitter that Elon Musk started to question what was going on. In response to MrBeast's retweet about 6 million trees planted, he tweeted, "Sounds cool. Where are the trees being planted & what kind of trees?" Marques Brownlee, a renowned tech YouTuber, answered him and gave him all the deets, and the next day, Elon Musk contributed 1 million trees and went by "Treelon" on his Twitter profile.

Tobias Lütke, CEO of Shopify, decided to 1Up Musk and donated 1,000,0001 trees for the campaign, knocking him out of first and crowning himself our new tree overlord, "Tobi Lorax" after The Lorax, a children's book by Dr. Seuss.
