Square Enix is selling Crystal Dynamics and Eidos to Embracer Group along with the rights to Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, and Thief, but that left many wondering about the future of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers. As it turns out, Embracer will continue publishing the two and aims to retain the rights.

In an investor call (as reported by Metro), Embracer said that it will continue to publish Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy with Disney's approval which is currently pending. What that actually means for the future of either series is unclear - Avengers is a live-service game, but it has a low player count and has allegedly been making a loss for Square Enix, while Guardians of the Galaxy too failed to meet expectations, underselling.

According to MST Financial senior analyst David Gibson, Square Enix lost $200 million on both Marvel games, making them costly investments that didn't pan out, but whether that number is true should be taken with a grain of salt. If the number is right, then it's unlikely that Embracer will continue to support Avengers, even if it does continue to publish the game. Guardians of the Galaxy, however, is a single-player experience, one that could be built on with a sequel. Whether Embracer does opt to go that route remains to be seen.

Guardians of the Galaxy was added to Xbox Game Pass, however, so it may have found a new audience to build from in a sequel. Regardless, all we can do right now is speculate as nothing is concrete and Disney's approval is still pending.

As for why Square Enix has sold the rights to Tomb Raider, Thief, and Deus Ex, and sold both Eidos and Crystal Dynamics, it's so the company can invest more money in blockchain, AI, and cloud technology, furthering its crypto goals.
