Anyone looking forward to stepping into the boots of Al Capone in Empire of Sin is going to have to wait. In a press release today, Romero Games' Brenda Romero confirmed that the XCOM-like strategy game has been delayed to fall 2020. Initially targeting a spring release, Romero cited concerns over polish as the reason for pushing the title back.

"The challenges in making a game like no-one has made before is exactly that – making a game no-one has made before," Romero said. "It takes time to get everything right and presents us with some unique opportunities. I am grateful we are taking the additional time to polish."

Announced last year during Nintendo's E3 Direct, Empire of Sin is a turn-based strategy game set during Prohibition-era Chicago. Allowing players to control the likes of Al Capone and other famous mobsters, the game is the brainchild of Brenda Romero and something she's wanted to create for nearly 20 years. Partnering with Paradox Interactive, she and her husband felt they had the perfect publisher to help bring this unique game to life.

Having seen the game in action at E3, I am very interested in it. While it wasn't yet in a playable state, the very concept is an exceptionally solid one for a strategy game. With lots of RPG-like elements and different character traits, there's a ton of variability when it comes to each playthrough.

The gameplay elements of trying to take over neighborhoods and manage your employees feels tailor-made for a game starring Al Capone. The man is notorious for his crime spree and played a key role during Prohibition. He had an organization that contained hundreds of people all working under the nose of the police. It's surprising why someone didn't make this game sooner.

When Empire of Sin does finally release, it will be available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch. The slower pace of the game makes it an ideal candidate for a console port, so don't think it will be compromised in any fashion. If anything, the Switch port could end up being the best version.
