Epic’s long-delayed free-to-play battle royale wrestling game finally has a release date. Rumbleverse is coming to PlayStation, Xbox, and PC via the Epic Games Store on August 11.
Originally announced at last year’s The Game Awards, Rumbleverse showcased 40-person melees between made-up wrestlers in a cartoonish urban environment. Players could elbow drop off of buildings, perform spinning power bombs off of sky scrapers, and suplex opponents through parked cars.
Speaking at the game’s announcement, Iron Galaxy Co-CEO Adam Boyes said that the idea was to make a "big, hilarious playground where spectacular things are always happening."
"This journey began for us with an idea to create an experience that was social, competitive, and chaotic," said Boyes. "Rumbleverse combines our love for melee combat with the teamwork and player expression that have made games such a crucial source of human interaction."
First set to launch in February, developer Iron Galaxy Studios announced an indefinite delay at the end of January so it could "perfect the experience." Six months was apparently just enough time, as now Rumbleverse is breaking onto the main stage in August.
A new trailer showcases several content creators playing Rumbleverse during internal playtesting. It shows a world that has a certain resemblance to Fortnite, only instead of guns and bombs, players throw punches, kicks, chops, and holds at anyone and everyone within reach. Players seem to be able to create their own custom wrestler designs, with cosmetics likely to be part of the game’s monetization.
Crossplay and cross progression will be available at launch, so you’ll be able to continue playing regardless of your platforms. Those platforms include PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via the Epic Games Store. Rumbleverse launches August 11.
Speaking of Fortnite, players can now acquire a Notorious BIG music pack in the item shop. This provides Fortniters both young and old a selection of tunes courtesy of Biggie Smalls, which play in the game's lobby or after a Victory Royale.
