Epic Games has confirmed that there are currently no plans to hold a Fortnite World Cup in 2021. The developer addressed the game’s competitive schedule for next year in a recent blog post, stating that all regular Fortnite Championship Series (FNCS) events will take place online.
The blog post starts off by confirming that all live events have been cancelled for 2021, as Epic does not feel they can hold these events safely. The Fortnite team states that the health and safety of players, as well as team and event staff are a priority. “With so much still unknown about what is practical and safe, we do not plan to hold in-person events in 2021,” Epic confirms, adding that this includes the Fortnite World Cup.
This year’s World Cup was also cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, along with countless other esports events. The first iteration of the Fortnite World Cup took place in 2019, in New York City, New York. Solos champion Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf won $3 million at the event at just 16 years of age.
The 2021 FNCS will take place entirely online, with party size being standardized to trios. The Chapter 2, Season 5 FNCS will begin on February 4th, which Epic states will give players “plenty of time” to adjust to the season updates. Epic also confirms that other tournaments such as Creator Cups will go on throughout the year, though they don’t give many details.
