Yet another week has arrived on the Epic Games Store, and that means another two free games for you to download and own forever and ever. This week we’ve got two classic Obsidian RPGs in Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny, both available from now until December 17 at 11 AM.

Pillars of Eternity is the better known of the two thanks to a critical consensus of being one of the best RPGs of all time. Pillars of Eternity won Best RPG of 2015 from several publications, including the Global Gaming Awards. It was so popular that it spawned a sequel in 2018 (Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire) and its engine served as the basis for the other game Epic is giving away.

Taking many queues from Baldur's Gate, Pillars of Eternity presents itself as a very D&D-inspired RPG. There are six races (Human, Aumaua, Dwarf, Elf, Godlike, and Orlan), 11 classes (Barbarian, Chanter, Cipher, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Priest, Ranger, Rogue and Wizard), and multiple endings depending on your choices throughout the story.

It's also a game you can beat without resorting to violence. All XP is gained from completing quests and discovering new areas, so progress isn't contingent on combat.

Tyranny came out in 2016 as an evolution on the Pillars of Eternity formula. The player character is completely classless and uses a skill-based system to develop their own personal playstyle, whether that's crushing the opposition with spells and swords, or negotiating for whatever it is they want.

In Tyranny, the player is a Fatebinder, an agent of the overlord Kyros who recently conquered the entire world. You're tasked with quelling a rebellion that's forming in the last part of the world that was conquered, and if you fail it will mean both your death and the deaths of everyone in the province. So the stakes are pretty high.

Besides the classless skill system, Tyranny's other big selling point is how much control the player has over the story. You can choose how Kyros conquered the world during character creation which will change which factions will be on your side and which will be against you. Decisions the player makes throughout the story will have great consequences on NPCs, what quests are available, and which ending the player receives.

Both games are available in their best forms, which are Definitive Edition for POE and Gold Edition for Tyranny. They include all expansion DLCs, soundtracks, digital stories, and more. Download them both for free on the Epic Games Store before December 17.
