The new year is coming with a new treat for Disney+ subscribers. It's just been announced that the MCU’s most recent team-up flick, Eternals, will hit the streaming platform on January 12, 2022. To celebrate the news, Disney has released a brand-new poster showing off the ultra-powerful superhero group.

Eternals marked a change of pace for the MCU as it entered its Phase 4. It centers around an immortal alien race, known as the Eternals, as they emerge from hiding to protect Earth from their evil counterparts, the Deviants. The film was hyped for its extensive timeline spanning thousands of years, as well as the infusion of more sci-fi elements into the superhero genre.

Directed by Oscar-winner Chloe Zhao, the film contains a powerhouse cast including Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Gemma Chan as Sersi, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Angelina Jolie as Thena, and Kit Harington as Dane Whitman/Black Knight. They will make their Disney+ debut in the new IMAX Enhanced format, allowing viewers to enjoy the action in an expanded aspect ratio. This new IMAX option, which offers up to 26% more picture for certain sequences, was introduced to 13 Marvel films as part of Disney+ Day.

Unfortunately, reviews for the film were rather mixed. While the movie was praised for its visuals, thematic choices, and acting, it was heavily criticized for its pacing, exposition, and lack of character development. These negative reviews led to the film becoming the MCU’s first rotten film on Rotten Tomatoes and the worst-rated MCU movie since Thor: The Dark World. Of course, with Eternals hitting Disney+ it will become more accessible to those that skipped the theatrical release due to ongoing Covid concerns. This may lead to a higher score in the coming weeks as more people review the film.

While many may have anticipated the Eternals hitting the streamer in time for the holidays, Marvel likely wanted to keep attention on the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home release on December 17. Plus, fans still have plenty of new content to get through on the service, including Shang-Chi which recently announced a sequel in the works.
