Marvel’s Eternals has arrived in theaters across the world, but not in certain Arabic countries. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have pulled Eternals from theaters thanks to a single gay character experiencing one scene of domestic bliss.

That character is Phastos, played by Brian Tyree Henry. He’s the first gay superhero to ever be shown in a Marvel movie. During the film, Phastos shares a kiss with his male partner during a scene with their adopted child before he’s recruited by the rest of the Eternals to fight off the Deviants.

According to a report from Variety, Disney was unwilling to cut the scene in order for Eternals to be aired in some foreign markets. Usually, giant blockbusters like Eternals are made to be easily edited in order to comply with foreign cinema guidelines. Arab nations typically cut sex, homosexuality, or religious scenes from movies, but this time Disney wasn’t willing to make the alterations.

It’s noted in the report that director Chloe Zhao has said in several interviews she personally didn’t want to see Eternals altered to comply with foreign guidelines, saying that Phastos’s homosexuality is an integral part of the film.

Rather than edit Phastos out, Disney just didn't release Eternals in Saudi Arabia or Kuwait. It can still be viewed in the United Arab Emirates, however.

In Singapore, Marvel's Eternals received an M18 Restricted rating. Although elsewhere the movie is largely rated PG-13 (or the local equivalent), Singapore's rules regarding homosexual content automatically granted the movie an M18 rating.

An outright sex scene between two heterosexual characters, however, would have been fine in Singapore for a PG-13 rating.

Arab countries might be fine with skipping Eternals, gay kiss or no. The film is Marvel's first rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an aggregate score of just 50% as of the time of this writing.
