In a statement yesterday, CCP Games announced that its players had broken two Guinness World Records titles in EVE Online, a space-based MMO role-playing game. More than 8,000 players competed for territorial control in Fury at FWST-8, a 14-hour long battle between two of EVE Online’s largest community-based organizations.

The two Guinness World Records titles won by EVE Online include the largest multiplayer video game PvP battle, with 8,825 players, and the most concurrent participants in a multiplayer video game PvP battle, with 6,557 active participants.

According to Guinness, a total of 8,825 players took part in Fury at FWST-8 with 11,258 characters from 114 different alliances for over 14 hours, breaking the previous record of 7,548 players. Meanwhile the concurrent peak of Fury at FWST-8 saw 6,557 participants simultaneously taking part in the battle, breaking the previous record of 6,142 concurrent players. The previous records were set during 2014’s Bloodbath of B-R5RB and 2018’s Siege of 9-4RP2.

“EVE Online is no stranger to massive in-game conflicts. Every time a big battle breaks out or our community comes together for a cause, it’s always a sight to behold,” said Hilmar V. Pétursson, CCP Games’ CEO. “Our players deserve all the credit that made these record-breaking achievements possible. Their support and dedication are what makes EVE Online the game that it is today.”

Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief for Guinness World Records noted that the game affords vast potential for an epic battle that reflects both player and gameplay skill. Glenday also congratulated the players, including ”those off licking their wounds” who won’t soon forget the epic battle.

Since July, an immense conflict between alliances has been underway in the game. Known as World War Bee 2, more than 130,000 players have competed for in-game territory and geopolitical supremacy. World War Bee 2 is the third global battle since the game was released in 2003.

Fury at FWST-8 was an attempt by the PAPI coalition to establish a Keepstar stronghold in Delve, enabling the coalition to further expand into the Imperium coalition’s territory with their forces. To prevent the invasion, the Imperium attempted to destroy the Keepstar and contain PAPI, which resulted in the destruction of 6,746 ships and the Keepstar stronghold, as well as 362 capital-class ships. A total of 1.443 trillion ISK (in-game currency), or $18,712, was lost in the effort.
