CCP Games, creators of the spaceship MMO game EVE Online, which was released in 2003, have announced that PLEX for GOOD, the charitable EVE Online program, has successfully raised $135,000 for the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund and the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security (CHS) since April 3.
PLEX for GOOD, a charitable program managed by CCP Games on behalf of EVE Online players, had already raised more than $107,000 in February for Australian bushfire relief efforts by the Red Cross. The program allows EVE players to donate to charitable causes through the use of the in-game digital currency PLEX.
“An unprecedented global crisis has been met by an unprecedented level of support and for that, I am once again hugely proud, grateful and humbled by the efforts of our players,”said Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP Games. “We stand together as a community in our support of the work that is being done by health workers, scientists, and institutes around the world to fight this pandemic and bolster its relief.”
The funds raised will directly benefit the World Health Organization (WHO) as they coordinate the global relief effort for the COVID-19 pandemic, supporting countries working to prevent, detect, and respond to the coronavirus crisis. It will also ensure that all countries – especially those with deficient health systems – are are able to contend with the virus, ensure the safety of its frontline healthcare workers and fast-track efforts to develop vaccines, tests, and treatments.
Since 2005, in the wake of the South East Asian Tsunami, PLEX for GOOD has raised more than $713,000 for charitable causes through EVE Online players, who can access the game for free at www.eveonline.com. The community-driven sci-fi MMO game enables players to build and pilot spaceships, cross solar systems and set their own space exploration goals. Set more than 21,000 years in the future, the game includes 7,800 star systems that players can visit.
