Everspace 2 made the wise decision to delay its early access release when Cyberpunk 2077 delayed to coincide with their release window. But now that Cyberpunk player counts have plummeted as everyone puts the game down waiting for some much-needed updates, Everspace developer Rockfish Games believes the time is right for them to make their move.
Everspace 2, the long-awaited sequel to 2017's roguelike space shooter, is coming to Steam and GOG early access on January 18, 2021.
To kick things off, Rockfish released a brand new 30-second trailer that doesn't really show much of anything except some neat spaceships and some cool explosions all set to a kickin' tune.
For those unaware, Everspace 2 will be the direct sequel to Everspace, but instead of a roguelike space shooter it'll be a persistent space shooter with tons and tons of loot. Rockfish has described the game as a "hack & slash action-RPG" in terms of random loot, skills, talents, and classes all based on which ship you decide to take to the stars in.
Controls can be Freelancer-style mouse & keyboard but there's full HOTAS support for those who want the authentic space-sim experience. Or you can resort to a controller if you prefer--Rockfish is making sure Everspace 2 supports many different types of playstyles.
Currently in beta, Everspace 2's early access period doesn't have a set end date. Much like other early access games, expect it to remain in early access until the devs are happy with it, then expect a wider release on other digital platforms, including consoles. Rockfish plans to release Everspace 2 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One by the end of next year, which means it’ll likely be playable on next-gen consoles through backward compatibility.
