You can play every character available in Heroes of the Storm right now, but probably only for a limited time.

It’s BlizzCon. Every Hero in Heroes of the Storm is free to play this week. Coincidence? Probably not. The first sign of Blizzard celebrating players with free stuff? Absolutely.

BlizzCon 2019 kicked off today with Blizzard’s much-maligned MOBA Heroes of the Storm leading the charge. For a limited time, you can play every character in the HOTS roster in any game you want. They all have the “free this week” symbol on the character select screen, meaning there’s no need to purchase this character to play them.

This is a great opportunity for HOTS players to try out a new Hero, and if they like them, purchase them when they eventually get taken off “free to play” status (likely in the week following BlizzCon).

If you’ve never even heard of Heroes of the Storm, well, that’s sort of the problem from Blizzard’s perspective. Their plan of making a better MOBA than Dota2 and League of Legends never really came to fruition despite the fact that HOTS is arguably the more fun game. The mechanics are streamlined, builds are simple yet diverse, and you don’t need to worry about taking time out of your match to go buy equipment. The action is non-stop and the characters are all taken from other Blizzard properties, making it the only game where you can actually play as Ragnaros rather than get squished by him.

Sadly, the game never took off, and Blizzard diverted much of the game’s development team to other projects at the end of 2018. They also shut down the game’s esports scene without any warning, angering many HOTS fans.

However, it looks like Blizzard hasn’t entirely given up on HOTS. The BlizzCon 2019 art features Heroes of the Storm prominently in the upper left corner with Mecha Tyrael, and the game will get an update presentation on Sunday during BlizzCon. We’ll find out what more Blizzard has in store for HOTS then.
