It may not be the direct prequel to Breath of the Wild that many had been hoping for, but Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is every bit as enjoyable. It serves as a prequel to the aforementioned game while also building on the excellent foundation laid by the original Hyrule Warriors game.

As with its predecessor, Age of Calamity allows players to unlock a steady stream of characters as they make their way through the main story and also has a handful of optional characters too. There are 18 in total, although if the original game is anything to go by, there are likely many more on the way. For the time being though, here's how players can unlock all of the game's current playable characters.

The Great Fairies

The Great Fairies from Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

In order to play as the Great Fairies, players will first need to unlock the "Help on the Road" quest during Chapter 4. Upon completing it, they will then gain access to three Fairy Fountain challenges. These can be completed in any order and doing so will unlock one final challenge.

The Deep Snow challenge requires players to defeat all five Ice Moblins before the Rito Captain flees and then defeat Kaysa. The Desert Sands challenge instead requires players to collect 600 rupees within 13 minutes and then best Tera. The Grassy Plains challenge is the most difficult of the three as it requires players to defeat a number of difficult enemies and collect rupees from chests to extend the stage's strict time limit. Players will then square off against Cotera, who is also incredibly difficult due to the limited space in the combat area.

The Battlefield Challenge will now be unlocked and requires players to defeat 6 Moblins that are separated into four waves. Each one has a strict time limit and requires players to collect rupees from chests in order to reset it between waves. After all six have been defeated, players will then need to defeat the fourth and final Great Fairy, Mija.

Calamity Ganon

Calamity Ganon from Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

In order to unlock the game's final boss as a playable character, you’ll need to have unlocked Terrako and completed all of the challenges that involve beating either Astor or Blight Ganons. Once these requirements have been met, you’ll gain access to the "Versus Calamity Ganon" challenge.

This one takes the form of a grueling boss rush, pitting you against Astor, Harbinger Ganon and Calamity Ganon one after the other. If that wasn't daunting enough already, there's a 12 minute time limit and your health carries over between enemies, meaning you'll need to be both quick and cautious if you hope to emerge victorious.

The first two enemies shouldn't cause too many problems thanks to their easy to read attacks and weakness to stasis respectively. Calamity Ganon presents a much bigger challenge, but by using what you've learned throughout the game you should be able to persevere.

He has several weaknesses, so be sure to exploit them whenever opportunities to do so present themselves and try and fire off a few arrows at his head from time to time to deplete his weak point gage. He'll mix up his move set a little at half health, but keep doing what you've been doing and he'll eventually go down. After he does, he'll be unlocked as a playable character.
