For those unaware by now, Yakuza: Like A Dragon is different from the rest of the series. Instead of a brawler it is now a turn-based RPG. As is tradition with many of these Japanese style RPGs, there is a class system, or Job system.

This does not unlock until about ten hours into Yakuza: Like A Dragon. There are twenty Jobs altogether with some being exclusive to one character, or have a gender exclusivity. There are two more Jobs that can be obtained through paid DLC but those won’t be covered as they are extra. That’s a lot of Jobs without them. So to make things easier, let’s go through what the best Jobs are and why in this breakdown.

Freelancer

There’s nothing really special about the Freelancer job. This is exclusive to Ichiban and is his starting class. It’s okay as an introduction to Yakuza: Like A Dragon’s mechanics.

Detective

The Detective is Adachi’s exclusive job. It’s slightly better than the Freelancer, but overall doesn’t offer that many cool abilities. It’s a fitting job for Adachi literally though.

Barmaid

This is Saeko’s starting job. It also makes sense given her actual employment, but it is a bit weird that all of her attacks are based on her purse.

Still, that purse packs a mean wallop all thanks to her wrists so good on her.

Clerk

This is Eri’s exclusive starting job. For those unaware Eri is a secret character that can be unlocked through the Ichiban Holdings mini game. It’s another okay starting class but it does have some funny things that raises it above the others like Healing Vibrations. Eri literally takes out a massager to heal herself.

Dealer

Getting out of the exclusive single person jobs, the dealer is a job only Eri and Saeko can take on. It’s basically the Gambler class from the Final Fantasy games. It has some decent tricks, but still isn’t that great in the grand scheme of Yakuza: Like A Dragon.

Breaker

This is an exclusive class for the male characters in Yakuza: Like A Dragon. Don’t let the name be misleading. This isn’t a muscle based job but is instead based around a beat boxer. It is as ridiculous as the breakdance fighting in Zoolander which makes it pretty funny to watch.

Enforcer

This is a class for the boys and is basically the SWAT equivalent of the Detective. In that way it makes a lot of sense to have Adachi become one when players can first choose their jobs. It has an average build but it does have one rare attack at level 28, Essence of Electromagnetic Storm, which is pretty strong and electric, a rarer skill.

Bodyguard

The Bodyguard job is yet another exclusive for the men. It has some pretty powerful stab attacks thanks to the trusty katana weapon of choice. There is also a good close to end elemental ability, Essence of Lightning Rod at level 24. Overall it is an average middle of the pack job.

Foreman

The Foreman job is for the guys and it’s about even with the Bodyguard. It’s another decent powerhouse but one with more blunt attacks via a hammer. Ichiban should at least take this job on once to get Demolish which is an exploration ability that can blow up hidden doors.

Hero

This is an exclusive class for Ichiban that he dons when he finds that bat. The Mega Swing is a great early area attack. Fearless Command, Peerless Resolve, and Indomitable Courage are all noteworthy too. This job has good buffs and area attacks but not much for overall power.

Musician

The Musician is another job exclusive to the men. It has two decent abilities that carry over to all other jobs and it is recommended that at least one party member gets them. Endless Desire casts a healing spell that gradually regenerates HP on the party starting at level four. Be My Shelter is acquired at level sixteen and it absorbs an enemy’s MP.

Fortuneteller

The, go figure, male only Fortuneteller job also has two drills that are worth investing time into because they can transfer. The Soul Tether can revive an ally which is unlocked at level four. Revival medicine is super expensive so this will help a lot. Fulminating Forecast is an electric attack that unlocks at level eighteen.

Chef

The male only Chef job is kind of like a Red Mage from Final Fantasy. It has a lot of varying abilities from stab and blunt attacks to more magic based fire abilities. Most of these don’t transfer over, but it is a powerful in-between class with a fiery intensity.

Homeless Guy

The Homeless Guy is exclusive to Nanba and he is also sort of a fire mage. His best ability is called Essence of Pyro Prison, which he gains through the story about midway through Yakuza: Like A Dragon. This is a good job for Nanba to keep after dabbling in a few others.

Idol

This is a job that is exclusive to Eri and Saeko. This is basically the White Mage of the group only in this case it’s a pop sensation. It is an essential job for the group in Yakuza: Like A Dragon. There are some great healing and buff abilities but not much for offense until the later tier of skillets.

Hitman

Yakuza: Like A Dragon gameplay screenshot

This is Joon-gi Han‘s exclusive starting ability. Like Nanba, Joon-gi Han should keep this class. It has some devastating power for knife, gun, and fist type attacks. The only downside is that most of the area attacks are learned in the later levels.

Gangster

This is Zhao‘s exclusive starting job in the game. Like Joon-gi Han‘s Hitman, the Gangster has some strong single attacks.

There are also more area effecting abilities thrown in here too making this class slightly better even though it lacks variety.

Night Queen

Yakuza: Like A Dragon gameplay screenshot

The Night Queen is for Eri and Saeko. If one girl is an Idol then the other girl should be a Night Queen. The power behind this one is intense plus it has two great area abilities that transfer to other jobs, Somersault Leg and Candle Rush.

Host/Hostess

Yakuza: Like A Dragon gameplay screenshot

This entry will combine the male centered Host with the female Hostess counterpart. The reason why they’re together is that they are essentially the same class. This is the best in Yakuza: Like A Dragon because it’s the only class with ice abilities which is a weakness for a lot of enemies. For the men, Ice Spreader can be learned at level ten while the girls have to wait until level Twenty-two for theirs. Both transfer so it is recommended that all party members eventually get these two abilities.
