Updated on November 8, 2023, by Dennis Moiseyev: Sam Lake and the creative team at Remedy are masters of unique play experiences. With the long-awaited launch of Alan Wake 2, it was time to give this article a much-needed makeover like the Dark Place in the new Alan Wake game. 10 Agents Of Storm

Agents of Storm was a freemium mobile game that launched on iOS in 2014 and was similar in design to other freemium games like Clash of Clans. Agents of Storm was supposed to get an Android launch after the iOS launch, but this never happened as it was a critical failure.

Many said it just wasn’t any different from other games of that style, relying heavily on microtransactions and didn’t offer much entertainment. In 2017, the game was shut down just before its third year of launch.

9 Death Rally Remake

The remake of Death Rally takes the classic vehicular combat racing game and gives it a fresh coat of paint. The game's premise sees you racing around tracks in cars that have been equipped with weapons that you use to eliminate other racers.

Best Racing Games For Beginners
From Forza Horizon 5 to Hot Wheels Unleashed, there are a ton of racing games on the market; but which ones are the best introduction to the genre?

It was first launched for mobile in 2011 before coming to PC in 2012, and even though the mobile ports were generally well-received, the PC version had a more negative reception. Although the remake is fairly similar to the original game, some felt that the small changes made to the game were for the worse.

8 Death Rally (1996)

Gameplay from the original Death Rally game from 1996, with green, yellow, blue, and purple cars racing.

The original Death Rally from 1996 is a fun and chaotic game that still holds up 25 years after its launch. It's also a better game than its remake that launched the year after Twisted Metal and the year before Carmageddon when vehicular combat was a hot item.

The game can still easily be enjoyed today thanks to Remedy porting it to Windows and releasing it as freeware in 2009, allowing you to experience the game in its original and unaltered state as you please. You can also find Easter eggs of Death Rally as arcade cabinets in other Remedy games such as Alan Wake: American Nightmare and Alan Wake 2.

7 Alan Wake's American Nightmare

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare follows the horror action-adventure game Alan Wake, playing similarly to the previous entry in the series, though with a tonal shift in the narrative. Alan Wake focuses on horror elements and the sense of isolation, whereas the follow-up is more lighthearted and offers more dark comedy.

The game continues the story of the fiction author who has to defeat an evil doppelgänger of himself that was created by the evil powers of the Dark Place in the first game. American Nightmare is great for fans of the original game who want some additional content like more weapon variety and an arcade mode.

Control is a game that is part X-Files and part Twin Peaks, with clear inspirations from the SCP Foundation. It has you exploring a building called The Oldest House — the headquarters for a secret government agency known as the Federal Bureau of Control that observes abnormal and supernatural objects and entities.

The plot of the game pulls you in from the start, with the strange and unexplained events you experience. Although not necessarily a horror game, Control does have horror elements and oozes an atmosphere that immerses you into a world full of mystery and intrigue in a Metroidvania-style design.

Alan Wake is a third-person survival horror game that has you playing as the titular character, who is an author of crime novels. It's a great survival horror game with a gripping story in which you question your reality as a series of supernatural events strangely unfold from your manuscripts, all the while trying to find your wife. And it's received a remaster in 2021.

The game stands out from other titles in the genre as you must use a flashlight to make the shadowy enemies vulnerable before you can finish them off with your weapons. The flashlight adds another thing for you to manage and preserve besides ammunition, as it requires batteries, and overall, all the fans of survival horror owe it to themselves to play this game.

The second installment in the Max Payne series was the last Max Payne game developed by Remedy, with the third being handed over to Rockstar. Max Payne 2 continues the dark neo-noir story of the first entry and, of course, sees the return of bullet time.

Action heroes are a classic trope, and while movies might be what comes to mind, there are video game characters who fit the bill.

Max Payne 2 was critically well-received with minor criticisms being placed on its short duration, but unfortunately, the positive critical consensus didn’t translate into sales, and it sold poorly. However, the game stands the test of time and even now still provides one of the best experiences in gaming.

2 Max Payne

The first Max Payne is a game that changed the gaming industry forever upon its release, with innovative mechanics and an extremely dark story. Max Payne is credited as being the first game to truly implement bullet time, a mechanic that slows down time, giving you more time to react.

Variations of the bullet time feature have appeared in games such as the F.E.A.R. and Red Dead series. The mechanic transformed the game completely, allowing you to slow down time as you dive through the air firing your guns like the star in an action film, making Max Payne a game that made a huge impact that is still felt today.

In Jade King's 5/5 star review of Alan Wake 2, she claims that the sequel to the 2010 cult supernatural thriller "perfects this craft" of the mind-bending experience Remedy instills in all its games that make you question everything that's happening. That's precisely what Alan Wake 2 feels like, with even the game's mechanics of the Angel Lamp, Overlap loops, and Alan's plot board in the Writer's Room instantly altering your environment.

Alan Wake 2 is also one of the scariest games you can play, filled with numerous terrifying moments happening in boss fights or masterfully implemented jumpscares that flash on-screen when you least expect it. The story is one of the studio's most ambitious and atmospheric and has a good layout for where Control 2 can go, not to mention all the twists and hidden plotlines setting up DLC and sequels.
