The alarming yet brilliant minds behind popular card game Exploding Kittens have another idea for the tabletop gaming space. This time they want to take the fun away from the table and grow it beyond a simple group of players. The result is Burning Cat, a convention that will be full of the same experimental, kooky, and potentially insane spirit behind Exploding Kittens.

The official website for Burning Cat describes it as "a tabletop carnival of oversized games, comics, and two-story tall cat monsters." It will take place on May 16 and 17 2020 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon. Tabletop games are a given, but at least one will happen on a giant scale. That would be Exploding Kittens itself using cards that are as tall as people.

Other games will include an experience based on the Bears vs. Babies card game, a dodgeball cage match played with plush burritos instead of balls, and an attempt to set the world record for the largest game of freeze tag. Traditional tabletop games will be represented as well via an in-convention library. Overall, there's a large emphasis on games that don't involve electronic devices.

Then, of course, there's the actual Burning Cat. Just as the convention's namesake, Burning Man, has a giant effigy of a person, Burning Cat will have a giant cat statue.

Sadly (or perhaps fortunately) the burning cat will not burst into actual flames like its human counterpart. Instead, lights and and lasers will pour out of it to give the illusion of fire. That still sounds like quite the show and is sure to give attendees something to remember. Plus it's an indoor con, so the lack of fire is a good thing.

There are plenty of other intriguing things set to happen at Burning Cat. Several well-known comics artists will make appearances. Indie creators can sign up for a free table, meaning attendees could be exposed to the next surprise tabletop hit. Every ticket comes with a "mysterious goodie bag" that's sure to contain some very odd items.

If Burning Cat has even a fraction of the creativity behind Exploding Kittens powering it, it's sure to be a wild and fun time. Tickets are already on sale here. If our readers do go, be sure to pay respects to the terrifying cat idol for us.
