If you don't already feel as if your webcam is watching you, then one designed to look and act like the human eye definitely will.

We are all being watched pretty much all the time, or at least that's how it feels. Some people hate that, while others aren't all that bothered. The former might be staring at their webcams all day, wondering who might be listening in, while the others forget it is even there. However, there is no forgetting Marc Teyssier's Eyecam is perched on top of your laptop keeping an eye on you.

As you can see in the demonstration below, the Eyecam has been designed to look and act just like a human eye. It stares at you, looks around the room, blinks, and even has an eyebrow. The Eyecam can even express emotion, and falls asleep and wakes up whenever it feels like it.

Teyssier spoke to IGN about their Eyecam and why exactly they created it. "I believe that if every device's working state and functions were explicit, it would better for end-users [and] privacy issues will be highlighted," Teyssier explains. "It is a 'Speculative Design' object, made to reflect on our relationship with webcams and sensing devices." Teyssier hopes the Eyecam will encourage people to rethink their relationships with sensing devices such as Amazon's Alexa.

The way the Eyecam works isn't just random, or at least it doesn't have to be. It will fall asleep when it gets tired late at night, or when you cover it with your hand as can be seen in the clip. It may also express anger if you spend too much time on YouTube when you should be working. Sounds like it could well be just the anti-procrastination tool a lot of people need.

There is some bad news, though. Teyssier doesn't ever intend on mass producing and selling the Eyecam. However, it is open-source and open hardware which means if you have the know-how, you can make one of your very own. The parts shouldn't cost much more than $25, which means you could have an Eyecam of your very own if you're willing to build it yourself.
