A new Fable game is in development, but with very few updates, the series has effectively been on ice since the last game in 2012. So it's not a surprise that one fan has decided to take matters into their own hands, giving the first Fable game the modern remake it deserves.

Over on YouTube and Reddit, user GamingRidge has been sharing progress on their own Fable remake. In the various videos and screenshots, we can see iconic locations from the first game lovingly recreated in Unreal Engine 5, giving us a taste of what a current-gen Fable would look like.

In the most recent update, we can see that Bowerstone's new makeover is all but complete. Even ported over into the fancy new engine, the area is undeniably Fable-esque, retaining its fairytale charm with improved textures.

In another screenshot, we see some pretty big changes to Oakvale too. Instead of using the design from the first game, GamingRidge has opted for the Fable 2 look, when Oakvale becomes the cursed Wraithmarsh. It's not clear why this now appears in a remake of the first game, but it's possible that this is what Oakvale will become if the player decides to slaughter the village.

GamingRidge is also sharing updates on YouTube, giving us a look at the game in action. As we can see from their latest clip, the Heroes' Guild is up and running, albeit missing a few textures. It's still a work in progress after all, but there's enough to explore for now. Best of all, the video shows us that there's no loading screen in-between the Guild and the outside world, opening up the area in a way previous releases of the first game just couldn't manage.

If this fan can get the remake fully playable, it will be a huge boon to the Fable community. Right now, the easiest way to play the first game is through Fable Anniversary on Game Pass (Fable 2 and 3 are fine - please play them). However, this release is extremely buggy - even more so than the original Xbox releases. But who knows? Maybe one day, we'll all be playing this fan remake instead.
