The world of Dragon Ball is littered with a number of memorable characters, each with their own personalities, quirks, and abilities, that have endeared them to the fans of the series. After all, without rich and memorable characters, it would've been close to impossible for this series to attain the status of being one of the most famous animated series of all time. Thankfully, with a creative genius like Toriyama at the helm of the character designs, the show was able to make the most of its interesting characters. One such character that evolved from a small kid into one of the most powerful Saiyans of all time has to be Gohan, who has etched his way into the hearts of devout Dragon Ball Z fans all over the world due to his endearing nature.

While Gohan's appeal might've lessened during the initial moments of Dragon Ball Super, when his power was ridiculously low, it seems that this is not the case anymore. After transforming into his Ultimate form, it seems that Gohan is poised for another breakthrough as a character, similar to his power spikes in Dragon Ball Z. However, don't be fooled by the badass nature of this character — the fact of the matter is that there are still many dark secrets you don't know about him... yet. Here are 25 of the most obscure facts you didn't have a clue about regarding Gohan.

25 Gohan Is The Only Person To Become A Super Saiyan Out Of Self Loathing

via youtube.com by BurningAttackHD

The trademark Super Saiyan transformation has become a staple of the series, and for good reason. Even since the viewers witnessed this transformation for the first time during the Frieza Saga, it was evident that we were in for a treat. Many of our favorite Saiyans went through this transformation for several reasons...

...but's in Gohan's case, things were a bit different.

Anybody who's seen the anime can vouch for the fact that Gohan was constantly saved by other people time and time again — something that hit Gohan hard during his training with his father. Being helpless every single time was too much for Gohan to bear, who constantly berated himself for not being powerful enough. Thankfully, this train of thought helped Gohan transcend to the level of a Super Saiyan, and also marked the first time that a Saiyan unlocked this power through self-loathing.

24 He Was Supposed To Be The Main Character After The Cell Saga

via youtube.com by SRB2DBZUnleashed

Gohan's presence in the Cell Saga was absolutely formidable, for more reasons than one. After all, he was able to unlock another stage of the Super Saiyan power, which ultimately helped him get a leg-up against Cell and defeat him — albeit with some help from the other Z Fighters.

In fact, he was actually supposed to replace Goku as the main character.

After Goku's demise in the Cell Saga, the idea of Gohan becoming the face of the series was seriously considered. However, for some reason, Toriyama decided to drop the idea, and Gohan's only major highlight in the series ended up being his triumph over Cell with perhaps the most iconic Kamehameha of all time.

Speaking of which...

23 Gohan's Trademark Kamehameha Was Done With One Hand Because His Other One Was Broken

via dualshockers.com

The Father-Son Kamehameha is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable and iconic moves in the entirety of Dragon Ball Z, and it's easy to see why this is the case. The sight of Gohan firing off a Kamehameha with one hand while his dad's spirit coaxes him on is an epic sight that few would forget. This different iteration of the Kamehameha can be seen in various games centered around the Dragon Ball universe.

However, most of these depictions forget one major thing.

You see, the main reason why Gohan fired off the Kamehameha with his right hand in the first place was that his left hand suffered a serious injury as a result of blocking a fatal attack by Cell, that was meant to destroy Vegeta. This inability of not being able to use his left arm lead to a situation where Gohan could only fire off his last Kamehameha with his right hand, resulting in an iconic scene that will be remembered for moments to come.

22 Gohan Does Exhibit The Infamous Saiyan Pride We All Know And Love

via youtube.com

Most people would consider Gohan to be a mild-mannered character who prefers to handle things in a non-lethal manner, unless absolutely necessary. However, power can be a dangerous thing indeed, which can be seen when Gohan achieves his Super Saiyan 2 form and attains a power level, unlike anything that had ever been seen before at that point.

But this limitless power awakened the Saiyan arrogance in him.

Instead of dealing with Perfect Cell in quick fashion like he should have, Gohan decided to take his sweet time and inflict the highest degree of pain possible upon Cell. This stubborn need for revenge led to the pointless demise of many characters, including Future Trunks and his own father. If Gohan had dealt with this threat quickly, then these lives wouldn't have been wasted.

It seems that Gohan and Cell were destined to fight for the fate of the universe from the get-go. We say this because...

21 Gohan Dreamt About Perfect Cell Before The Latter Even Existed

via youtube.com (SuicidalBeatz)

Gohan's training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber proved to be extremely fruitful, since it enabled him to awaken his latent power and achieve the Super Saiyan state for the very first time. However, it seemed that there was still some fear in Gohan's mind when it came to Cell's raw power.

The biggest indicator of this was a weird dream that Gohan had.

In this dream, Gohan can see Piccolo and Chi-Chi come over to the Time Chamber to check on his progress. However, before they could do so, Cell arrived at the chamber as well, and destroyed both of them. Watching two of the closest people in his life falling at the hands of Perfect Cell was quite disturbing for Gohan — especially since Cell hadn't even achieved his perfect form by that point. How was Gohan able to witness it in a dream?

20 Gohan Destroyed A Total Of Eight Cell Juniors, Even Though There Were Only Seven Present

via comicvine.gamespot.com

Since we're on the reliable topic of continuity errors, here's one of the most infamous ones in the Cell Saga that a lot of keen-sighted people have noticed as well.

So, during the Cell Games, seven creatures were spawned by Cell to take care of the Z Fighters. These creatures were called Cell Juniors, and absolutely decimated most of the fighters without much difficulty. However, when Gohan managed to achieve the Super Saiyan 2 powerup, he was able to destroy all the Cell Juniors with ease.

Unfortunately, it seems that the people behind the anime lost track of how many Cell Juniors had been unleashed upon the Z Fighters. We say this because Gohan is shown to have destroyed a total of eight Cell Juniors, while Cell had only spawned seven. It's a silly mistake, albeit a rather glaring one.

And speaking of mistakes...

19 Gohan's Tail Actually Grew Back

Gohan
via Dragon Ball Wiki

Anyone who is well-versed when it comes to anime can vouch for the fact that fillers are the most annoying thing ever. After all, no one wants to watch non-canon material simply because the manga is going on too slow. This is a problem that Dragon Ball Z experienced, and the filler that was meant to take care of this problem left a glaring hole in the series' plot.

Gohan's tail ended up growing back after it was plucked out by Piccolo.

During one of these filler episodes (when Gohan was being trained by Piccolo), Gohan ended up transforming into a Great Ape after looking at the full moon, causing Piccolo no end of trouble. Realizing that the tail was bad news, Piccolo removed it. However, since the Saiyan Saga included a scene where Gohan transformed into a Great Ape, the showrunners had to bring this tail back without explaining how.

18 Gohan Is The Only Half-Saiyan Who Was Able To Grow A Tail

via tartarugasdagalaxia.blogspot.in

Since we're already on the topic of Saiyan tails, it's time to talk about a major plot hole that Toriyama probably forgot about.

Unless you happened to forget, let us remind you that Gohan is actually a half-Saiyan (obviously). He's also the first half-Saiyan that is shown in the series, so it's not really odd that we witness him with a full grown tail.

A tail that is notably absent on the other half-Saiyans.

Yep. For some reason, Gohan was the only half-Saiyan who managed to grow a tail. This growth is notably absent in Trunks and Goten, which can only mean that the Great Ape transformation became nothing more than a relic of Dragon Ball's past.

17 Chi-Chi Wanted To Name Gohan "Einstien" Or "Archimedes"

via hero.wikia.com

It goes without saying that Chi-Chi is one of the most dominating females that you will ever witness. A strong individual who wants her family to do well in life (although the manner in which she wishes to achieve it might be questionable), Chi-Chi decided from the moment Gohan was born that he would become a great scholar.

In fact, her obsession with directing Gohan's academic growth the instant he was born was so intense that she initially wanted to name her son "Einstien" or "Archimedes." Thankfully, they decided to name him Gohan instead, which was obviously a wise decision. After all, Son Einstien would not've fit Gohan's character at all.

But it seems that Chi-Chi was right when it came to Gohan's intelligence, since...

16 Gohan Could Do Trigonometry At Just Four Years Old

via youtube.com

The word trigonometry can trigger some highly unpleasant feelings in the minds of anyone who had to deal with the dreaded subject of mathematics. It's certainly not an easy topic to digest, and most people would definitely find themselves in a dilemma if they had to tackle any complicated problem that fell under this topic.

But Gohan is definitely not one of these people.

Gohan's IQ is certainly something to fear, and this can be seen in the rather unbelievable fact that he was able to learn and master trigonometry at the tender age of 4. Most kids start off in kindergarten at this age, but not Gohan — he's already at an advanced level, which is a term that can also be used to describe his fighting skills.

We say this because...

15 Gohan Has The Potential To Become The Strongest Saiyan Of All Time

via

Gohan's power level was already fearsome enough when he was just a mere kid. The sight of him headbutting Raditz has remained in the minds of viewers all over the world who were hooked from the very first episode of Dragon Ball Z. In fact, Gohan's fighting prowess has shown no sign of waning anytime soon.

In fact, his potential makes him perhaps the most fearsome Saiyan fighter of all time.

We've already talked about Gohan's impressive intellect, which will ultimately result in him developing an acute battle awareness that will help him analyze the best strategy that can be taken for any battle. His physical prowess is also nothing to scoff at — in a short span of time, he was able to shake off his battle rust and attain a ton of power. In fact, the events of Dragon Ball Super have conveyed one thing for sure...

14 Ultimate Gohan Is Almost As Powerful As A Super Saiyan Blue

via IGN India

After a grueling training session with Piccolo, Gohan was finally able to regain his full potential and transformed into a warrior that would strike fear in his enemy's hearts (again). The fact that he was able to attain this power so quickly after not training for many years proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Gohan can become one of the strongest Saiyans ever if he really put his heart into his training.

In fact, Gohan's Ultimate Form is almost as powerful as a Super Saiyan Blue.

This is no easy feat — after all, the power of a Super Saiyan Blue is akin to that of a God, and no mere mortal should have the power to even put up a fight with such a massive entity. But Gohan is no mere mortal, and Goku acknowledged this by saying that Gohan had progressed by leaps and bounds when it came to his training.

This father-son bond is one of the more special things that Dragon Ball stresses on, although thankfully it didn't become too awkward and reach the point that we're about to cover.

13 Gohan Was Supposed To Fuse With His Dad During the Buu Saga

via yuseifudou97.deviantart.com

Imagine sharing a body with your dad, of all people. Now that you've stopped retching, let's get into the meat of this entry.

The Potara earrings were a focal point of the Buu Saga, since the Z Fighters needed a massive power boost that would help them deal with the threat that was Buu. So, when Goku received these earrings from the Supreme Kai, Goku decided to use this substantial powerup to combat Buu.

His fusion partner of choice? His own son.

Yep, if Super Buu hadn't absorbed Gohan, then we would've been privy to a fusion between Gohan and his own father. The mere idea of such a fusion is simply revolting — and somewhat intriguing, we must say — and we're glad that Goku ended up fusing with Vegeta instead.

12 His Earlier Appearances In Dragon Ball Super Are Nothing More Than Filler

via www.normacomics.com

It honestly sucks that Gohan has sunk from being one of the most powerful characters in the entire Dragon Ball universe, to being nothing more than an afterthought. While he might become an integral part of the series right now with his Ultimate Gohan form, it still must be said that he was heavily underutilized during the early stages of Dragon Ball Super.

In fact, most of his appearances in the anime are actually filler.

Now, while it's true that in the case of Dragon Ball Super, the anime is the main property while the manga is following hot on its heels, it's still quite telling that most of Gohan's scenes — especially the ones where he's The Great Saiyaman — are completely absent from the manga. Toriyama and Toyotaro's nonchalant attitude when it comes to the portrayal of such a major character is quite displeasing, to say the least.

11 Gohan's Obsession With The Color Green

via OtakuKart

Gohan's green tracksuit is certainly one of the most disgusting looks that he's ever adorned. This new look doesn't suit him at all, and we're glad that he went back to the iconic battle gi that we all know and love. However, it seems that Gohan still has a weird obsession with the color green that absolutely must be addressed.

In fact, Gohan's tracksuit isn't the only thing that's covered in green. His sweater, house shoes, and even his phone are green in color, for some odd reason. Of course, a viable explanation might be that the color green has been imprinted on Gohan from an early age, since Piccolo ended up being a father-figure to him after all.

And speaking of Piccolo...

10 Gohan's Move Masenko Translates To "Demon Flash," And Might Relate To Piccolo

via reddit.com by joe4553

In the absence of Goku (which has happened an absolute crapload of times), Piccolo has taken up the responsibility of teaching martial arts to Gohan, and — in general — being a father figure of sorts. The moves that Gohan picked up during his time training with Piccolo are certainly reminiscent of his training period with Piccolo.

One such move is the Masenko, which literally translates to Demon Flash.

Anybody who has some knowledge when it comes to Piccolo knows that he is known as the Demon King. This technique has been used by Piccolo before, and the fact that Gohan still uses it even now (albeit very rarely) shows that he is still indebted to his mentor in more ways than one, for training him when Goku was unable to do so.

Since we're already talking about demons, there's one more thing that we need to talk about.

9 Gohan Married Into A Family With Creepy Names

via: dragonball.wikia.com

If we wouldn't know better, then one could draw the conclusion that Gohan has an unnatural attraction when it comes to devilish things.

I mean, just take a look at the family that Gohan married into. There's obviously Mr. Satan, Gohan's father-in-law, who literally shares the name with the devil. Now, you might be thinking that this flimsy relation is a bit of a stretch... until you take a closer look at Videl's name.

Her name is an anagram for "devil."

Now that your mind has officially been blown, do you believe us now? Of course, this might just be a Toriyama thing — after all, most of the names that he comes up with are rather weird, but even then, it's certainly a bit too much to rip out names from the depths of Hell.

8 The Timeline Where Gohan And The Rest Of The Z Fighters Perish Is The Original Timeline

via dragonball.wikia.com

The History Of Trunks is perhaps the best Dragon Ball movie of all time. Very few people will argue against this fact, especially if they've seen some of the absolute garbage movies that the franchise has churned out. The movie is one of the most emotional anime stories of all time, and elicited a tear in many fans who expected to see the usual Dragon Ball story. In fact, the timeline covered in this series is nothing short of horrifying.

The worst part is that the world of Future Trunks is the original timeline.

While most fans might refer to it as the Future Timeline, the fact of the matter is that the Z Fighters actually were supposed to perish at the hands of the Androids, and it's only through Trunks' meddling with the very concept of time itself that the Z Fighters of the past were able to avoid such a grim fate.

7 There's A Continuity Error When It Comes To Gohan's Demise

via youtube.com by HappyAsianVA - The Happiest of Asians (who is a voice actor)

Unfortunately, we still need to talk about this tragic movie — albeit for a different reason. In fact, the moment we're about to talk about is perhaps one of the saddest things in the entirety of Dragon Ball (although it did lead to one of the best Super Saiyan transformations of all time). Yep, we're talking about Gohan's untimely demise.

Somehow, the animators managed to screw up this pivotal moment.

During the last battle between Future Gohan and the Androids, Gohan is lying on his back as he gets barraged by energy blasts from 17 and 18. However, when Trunks stumbles upon the body, Gohan is lying face down. Obviously, in the grand scheme of things, the majority of fans didn't notice this problem, but it's still a sticking point nevertheless.

6 Gohan is The Only Member Of The Son Family Who Has A Career

via youtube.com by DBZhdClips

Now here's an interesting fact that has been overlooked by the majority of fans who watch the series.

The Son family is not really known for holding down actual jobs. Goku is a fighting fanatic whose only goal in life is to figure out the best way to get strong, no matter what. Goten is barely old enough to think logically, let alone work a proper job. Chi-Chi serves the role of a dutiful housewife who takes care of her kids. This leaves one person — Gohan.

Chi-Chi would certainly be proud of the way she grew Gohan. After the Buu Saga, Gohan got his act together and gave up martial arts so that he could raise a proper family with Videl. His studies paid off, since he became an intellectual person and a dutiful father, who could provide for his family with ease.
