Fairy Tail, a manga which spawned sixty-three volumes and an anime that has been going on over nine years, is getting an action JRPG courtesy of GUST Studios with a slated to arrive time on the PS4 sometime in 2020.

Hiro Mashima, the creator of Fairy Tail, had his first issue published on August 2, 2006, and it didn't take long for the manga's popularity to rise, with it becoming the eight best-selling manga series in Japan in 2009. As its consumption increased, so too did its reach, with the first English language volumes being released in North America on March 25, 2008. Soon after its English release, A-1 pictures would begin production on an anime adaptation, with the first episode being released on October 12, 2009. The manga would end its run on July 26, 2017, but the anime adaptation for the series is still ongoing and currently in its final season. Like most popular manga/anime series, Fairy Tail has had its fair share of video games released, with the last, Fairy Tail Dice Magic, being released on iOS and Android on January 16, 2019. Now, the latest game, entitled Fairy Tail, has been announced with a tentative release date of 2020.

The fact that Fairy Tail has lasted this long is a testament to the worldwide popularity of the series to date. With the anime ending its run soon, this new game couldn't have come at a better time. If it sells well, it could spawn a long series of games that continue along the same vein.

Information on the announcement can be found on the official PlayStation YouTube channel, where it is revealed that Gust Studios will be developing the new JRPG under the direct supervision of Hiro Mashima himself. Within the announcement trailer, we a greeted with highly detailed recreations of the series most iconic characters, complete with intense battle sequences and glimpses of the game's combat. Furthermore, text within the trailer reveals that the game itself will be styled in the fashion of a JRPG, with elements of magic and guild mechanics. Sony is quick to point out that both the images and battle sequences present in the trailer are directly from an in-development version of the game. While the exact date isn't revealed, users will be able to purchase Fairy Tail on the PS 4 sometime in 2020.

The fact that GUST and author Hiro Mashima are working together to create a new game is a great sign for fans everywhere. His presence will help to garner attention from potential consumers and as a result, GUST has a real chance of producing a worldwide hit title.

There have been countless instances were games based on anime or manga series have flopped due in large part to lacking proper direction, or not properly following the story. With the inclusion of Mashima, it's highly unlike that this latest title will fall prey to the same issues.
