In a world saturated with battle royale games that revolve around killing each other, Fall Guys is the Takeshi's Castle-styled twist on the genre we've been waiting for.

The battle royale genre has taken off in gaming in a way no one could have possibly envisioned. Fortnite has led the way and now has more than 10 million concurrent players worldwide. Other titles that are not battle royale based have felt forced to add battle royale modes to their games, such as Call of Duty. It is ultimately video gaming's cash cow right now.

However, there is only so much you can do with any genre before it is ultimately bled dry. That's why when Mediatonic's Creative Director, Jeff Tanton, asked employees to come to him with ideas for potential new games, he hammered home the point that he did not want those ideas to be battle royale based. A few months later, Tanton found himself describing Mediatonic's new battle royale-based game to Gamesindustry.biz.

It's called Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, and it is unlike any battle royale game that has come before it. Instead of killing your 99 rivals, as is the aim with almost any other battle royale title, you have to outlast them in what is effectively a game show setting. There are five rounds, each of which will whittle down the number of players left in the game.

Any players remaining after the first four rounds will then face Fall Mountain. The first player to grab the crown at the top of the mountain will be declared the winner. For fans of TV show Takeshi's Castle, the game is very much inspired by the iconic Japanese game show. The creators have even admitted that, and some of the 30 different rounds that will be in the game upon release have been lifted right from the show.

Tanton wants Fall Guys to be a battle royale title for everybody. Not a game like Fortnite, which is really only reserved for players who are relatively good at it by this point. As mentioned, when Fall Guys is released, it will feature 30 different rounds, so each run to make it to Fall Mountain will be different. There are also plans to add more stages after release. We've got a while to wait to try it out, though. Fall Guys will be released on PlayStation 4 and PC in 2020.
