One of the more unique settlements you'll conquer in Fallout 4 during the Minuteman questline is the Castle, an old fort located on the eastern coast of the Commonwealth, south of Boston. Initially, the Castle is overrun by Mirelurks and a Mirelurk Queen, which need to be defeated in order to set up a radio transmitter on site.

After that, the location is revisited during the quest Old Guns and subsequent battles against the Institute or even the Brotherhood of Steel. However, while the Castle might just seem like a convenient place for big battles, there's a lot here that tends to go unnoticed by players. From loot to small details that can make settlement building easier, here are a few details to look out for on your next visit.

10 Rare Wine

Fallout 4 McGann's Body in the tunnels

Alcohol isn't a big rarity in the game, but wine specifically can be incredibly hard to come by. As with all questionable substances, wine also has a risk of making the player addicted to it. However, it gives the player a nice strength boost, as well as a huge Action Point boost of +15.

To get your hands on some rare wine bottles, head downstairs to the tunnels of the castle and grab a few right next to the body of General McGann. And of course, if you still haven't for some reason taken his clothes, now is the time.

9 Skeleton In The Wall

Not all hidden details have a function. Some of them are there just for aesthetic and for a bit of immersion. They make you wonder why this object is here in the first place and what must have happened here previously. That's certainly what this skeleton in the wall does, to say the least of it.

To find this creepy skeleton just hanging around in the walls of the Castle, you need to go downstairs into the tunnels. He's visible through a large crack in the wall but might be easy to miss.

8 Guns And Bullets #8 Magazine

Magazines are an essential part of a proper character build and for getting perks. Collecting them all will amount to some significant boosts in skills and abilities, so it's always a good idea to keep an eye out for these objects lying around on the ground, crates, and on tables. One is actually found right here in the Castle.

The Guns and Bullets #8 magazine is right next to the radio transmitter at the center of the inner courtyard. With each issue, ballistic weapons will do 5% more critical damage, making this one of the best and most versatile magazines to collect.

7 Nuka Grenade

Players looking for more rarities and interesting weapons should head over to the Castle's armory to pick up a Nuka Grenade. This explosive weapon is fairly rare in the Commonwealth, and it's not very obvious at all in the Castle either, as it sits on a top shelf. You'll need to jump to get to it.

The Nuka Grenade is one of the best grenades out there, if not the best. It creates a powerful mini nuclear explosion upon impact and is very similar to mini nukes when using a Fat Man. However, these are convenient since they don't require you to carry a Fat Man to launch them.

6 Bottle Message #2

For a bit of extra loot located just outside of the Castle, walk down over to the beach directly behind the fort. There should be a pretty easy-to-spot bottle with a message lodged into the dirt that you can pick up for a small side quest. The quest leads you to a spot in the water where a boat is located.

To complete this little quest just grab the loot from the container. The boat should be pretty easy to find since a small pole will stick out of the water at its location nearby Spectacle Island.

5 The Last Minute Unique Weapon

A unique weapon can also be acquired from the Castle, but in order to get this one in particular you first need to complete the Old Guns quest with Ronnie Shaw, which involves clearing the Castle's tunnels and building an artillery piece for the settlement itself.

After speaking with Preston and completing the quest, return to Ronnie and ask to trade with her. She'll offer a unique gauss rifle known as The Last Minute, which does 50% more limb damage and is actually pretty good for any energy weapon character builds.

4 First Aid Store

Fallout 4 the castle corridor

The whole point of the Castle is to become a settlement like any other place and it does show quite a bit of promise in this regard. Walking around in the corridors of the inner walls, it's evident that there was once some type of a settlement here, with merchants and even a chemistry station.

Most importantly, however, there's a possibility to open up a first aid store in the castle, which is something players might not initially take note of. There's a specific spot for this shop located in the castle walls, so make sure to take advantage of it when building up the Castle to a proper settlement.

3 Guard Patrols

The Castle is a very particular and special type of settlement. It's easy to defend due to the natural cover it provides, which makes it a great settlement to have despite being in a location where raids tend to be quite frequent.

However, another positive aspect is the number of guards needed to cover the full wall. Guard posts in the Castle are actually not static like in all other settlements. The guards assigned to the wall of the Castle actually rotate and walk around, which means that only two guards patrolling the Castle's walls will be enough to cover its entire ground.

2 Electrical Wiring Is Already In Place

Unlike a lot of the other settlements that need a serious amount of TLC, the Castle is fairly well equipped for rebuilding. It even has some rudimentary wiring already in place, in particular for lighting inside its corridors.

When placing down generators, make sure to take that into account. The generators should not only provide power for the inside area of the Castle, but also to the radio transmission tower in the middle.

1 Water Purifier

Another goodie that's already found at the castle is a water purifier tank. This is a grossly underrated object when it comes to settlement building, and is almost always overlooked by players who are new to creating their own settlements.

The purifier in the Castle is already wired in, so all it takes is a generator to power it up. With that, drinking from the taps of the Castle will never harm the player with radiation damage, which is extremely useful at higher difficulties in particular.
